The Dynamic Integrated Theory of Korean Ethnogenesis

Abstract

This study reexamines existing theories concerning the origin of the Korean people and proposes a new theoretical framework for explaining the process of Korean ethnogenesis. To achieve this objective, historical documents, archaeological evidence, and genetic studies were analyzed through literature review, comparative analysis, and descriptive analysis.  The findings indicate that previous studies have generally interpreted Korean origins from the perspective of a single place of origin, limiting their ability to explain ethnogenesis as a long-term historical process. The evidence examined in this study suggests that the origins of the Korean people are rooted in the northern cultural sphere, including Manchuria and Liaodong, and that this cultural tradition was inherited through Gojoseon, Buyeo, and Goguryeo. Archaeological materials from the Liao River Civilization, Hongshan Culture, and the Liaoning Bronze Dagger cultural sphere, together with genetic research, further indicate that the Korean people developed through the long-term integration of diverse populations centered on a northern core.   Based on these findings, this study argues that ethnogenesis should be understood as a continuous historical process of mobility, contact, fusion, and reconstruction. It therefore proposes the Dynamic Integrated Theory of Ethnogenesis, which explains ethnic formation as a dynamic and cumulative process rather than the result of a single origin. In addition, Shin Chae-ho's Pamir Plateau Theory is reinterpreted as a Historical Spatial Theory, emphasizing a broader Eurasian framework for understanding Korean history. Finally, the study presents the Northern-Centered Fusion Formation Theory as an interpretive model of Korean ethnogenesis grounded in the Dynamic Integrated Theory. By moving beyond debates over a single place of origin, this study offers an integrated analytical framework for understanding the historical formation of the Korean people.

Introduction

Research on the origins of the Korean people is not merely an inquiry into historical beginnings but also a significant issue closely related to the history of Northeast Asia. Although China’s Northeast Project has intensified debates concerning Gojoseon and the formation of the Korean people, research on Korean origins and ethnogenesis has not yet achieved remarkable progress. Until now, studies concerning Korean origins have rarely addressed the issue comprehensively. Instead, they have generally been conducted as subsidiary fields of documentary history, resulting in limitations in identifying the central axis and historical direction of Korean ethnogenesis.

The present study emerged from the author’s investigation of Shin Chae-ho’s continental historical perspective. Through this research, the author observed limitations in existing studies concerning Korean origins and migration. Existing approaches often failed to establish a broader analytical framework and tended to understand Korean ethnogenesis as a completed result originating in a particular region or historical moment.

Shin Chae-ho argued that the Korean people originated from the Pamir Plateau and migrated eastward in search of brightness before eventually settling on the Korean Peninsula.[1] This raises several questions:

• How does the Pamir Origin Theory relate to major theories concerning Korean origins?
• What relationship does it have with existing theories?
• Is it possible to develop a comprehensive interpretive framework that integrates these theories?
• If such a framework exists, can it be systematized?

These questions constitute the background and motivation for the present study.

To address these issues, this study first compares and analyzes the Northern Origin Theory, Southern Origin Theory, and Multiple-Origin Theory. It then conducts a comprehensive examination of documentary evidence, archaeological materials, and genetic research in order to reinterpret the process of Korean ethnogenesis and propose a new theory concerning the origins and formation of the Korean people. The specific objectives of the study are as follows:

1. To compare and analyze the achievements and limitations of the Northern Origin Theory, Southern Origin Theory, Multiple-Origin Theory, and Pamir Origin Theory.
2. To conduct a comprehensive review of documentary sources, archaeological evidence, and genetic research in order to empirically analyze the historical development of Korean ethnogenesis.
3. To reinterpret Shin Chae-ho’s Pamir Plateau Theory not as a direct theory of origin but as a Eurasian historical spatial theory.
4. To propose a new theoretical framework and model concerning the origins and migration of the Korean people based on the results of these analyses.

To achieve these objectives effectively, the spatial scope of this study includes the Korean Peninsula, Central Eurasia, and Japan. Research methods consist of literature review and internet-based investigation, while comparative and descriptive analytical methods are employed.

Since questions concerning the origins and formation of the Korean people do not readily lend themselves to statistical analysis or the application of fixed theoretical models, this study considers it more appropriate to employ descriptive analysis based on historical, archaeological, and genetic research conducted both domestically and internationally.

Review of Previous Studies on Theories of Korean Origins

This chapter examines previous studies concerning the origins and migration of the Korean people and analyzes their limitations. It focuses on four major theories—the Northern Origin Theory, Southern Origin Theory, Multiple-Origin Theory, and Pamir Plateau Theory—and evaluates their contributions and shortcomings while clarifying the distinctiveness of the present study.[2]

1) Northern Origin Theory

The Northern Origin Theory identifies the origins of the Korean people within the northern cultural sphere centered on Manchuria and the Liaodong region. For a long time, this theory has been regarded as the most influential explanation of Korean ethnogenesis.

In his Ancient History of Korea (1989), Yoon Nae-hyun argued that the Liaoxi region should be included within the territory of Gojoseon and that the Lower Xiajiadian Culture had already entered the stage of state society.[3]

Ri Ji-rin explained the historical reality of Gojoseon through the cultural continuity of bronze daggers and bronze mirrors found throughout Manchuria and Liaodong.[4]

In “New Horizons in the Study of Ancient Philosophy, Religion, and Culture in Northeast Asia” (2021), Woo Silha argued that: “The Liao River Civilization, represented by the Hongshan Culture and the Lower Xiajiadian Culture, emerged in the Liao River basin. The indigenous Yi (夷) populations of Northeast Asia were based in the Liao River Civilization region and were closely connected to Gojoseon. The people who built and inhabited the Liao River Civilization were the ancestors of the Yemaek (濊貊) people, who later established Gojoseon, Buyeo, Goguryeo, and Balhae.”[5]

Pang Min-Kyu (2025), in “Latest Research Results and Prospects on Korean Origins” explained that: “The Korean people were formed when the Yemaek populations already residing in the north migrated southward and blended with local cultural elements.”[6]

These studies demonstrate that the central axis of Korean ethnogenesis was located within the northern cultural sphere encompassing Manchuria and Liaodong. However, they tend to underestimate the significance of indigenous cultures of the Korean Peninsula and southern cultural influences.

2) Southern Origin Theory

The Southern Origin Theory seeks the origins of the Korean people, or at least some components of Korean culture, in southern China and Southeast Asia.

This theory is primarily based on the diffusion of agricultural culture, linguistic similarities, and prehistoric maritime interactions.

In Footprints of the Korean People (1994), Kim Byung-Mo proposed the Southern Dolmen Origin Theory and argued that: “Large-scale migration from southern regions to the Korean Peninsula occurred during the Bronze Age.”[7]

In The Origins of the Korean People (2001), Lee Hong-Kyu divided Koreans into two ancestral groups: “One group left Africa fifty to sixty thousand years ago and entered the Korean Peninsula through Central Asia and Siberia, while another group migrated northward along coastal routes.”[8]

In Guns, Germs, and Steel (2005), Jared Diamond proposed that: “The Japanese are descendants of migrants who brought rice agriculture and iron culture from Korea around 400 BCE, and genetic evidence also indicates that Koreans exerted a major influence on Japanese genetic composition.”[9]

The French missionary Claude-Charles Dallet, who entered Korea in the late nineteenth century, described Koreans in History of the Korean Church (2015 edition) as belonging to a Mongoloid lineage and observed that Koreans possessed physical characteristics more similar to Japanese than to Chinese populations.[10]

Similarly, Homer B. Hulbert (1906) agreed with Dallet and argued that: “Dravidian peoples reached the Korean Peninsula by sea and influenced the formation of the Korean people.”[11] These studies suggest that southern cultural elements contributed to the formation of Korean culture. However, they have difficulty explaining the archaeological continuity linking Korean ethnogenesis to northern cultural traditions.

3) Multiple-Origin Theory

The Multiple-Origin Theory argues that populations from both northern and southern regions entered the Korean Peninsula at different times and eventually merged with indigenous inhabitants to form the Korean people.

Pang Min-Kyu (2025) argued that: “The ancestors of Koreans were initially formed around northern populations and subsequently mixed with southern populations, becoming the principal force behind the formation of the Liao River Civilization and the cultural sphere of Gojoseon.”[12]

In “Siberian Indigenous Peoples and the Origins of Korean Culture (II)” (2024), Choi Mong-Lyong explained that: “The origins of Koreans emerged through a long-term and multi-layered process extending from Siberia through Manchuria to the Korean Peninsula.”[13]

Ahn Sung-Mo (2003), in “The Lineage of the Korean People from an Archaeological Perspective,” argued that:

“The Korean people were formed within the broader Northeast Asian region, including northeastern China, the Russian Far East, and the Korean Peninsula, while population movements during the Bronze and Early Iron Ages occurred primarily around the Pan-Bohai Sea region.”[14]

Han Sang-Bok (2002), in “Anthropological Characteristics,” stated that: “The Korean people were primarily formed from the Northern Neo-Siberian lineage, while groups historically recorded as Suksin, Joseon, Yemaek, and Dongyi were closely related to Korean ethnogenesis.”[15]

These studies successfully demonstrate that northern culture, southern culture, and indigenous Korean Peninsula cultures interacted over a long period to produce the contemporary Korean people. However, they often fail to identify a clear central axis of ethnogenesis and provide only limited historical narrative and directional explanation.

4) Pamir Plateau Theory

The Pamir Plateau Theory originates from the argument of Shin Chae-Ho in Joseonsa (History of Korea), Part II, “The Age of Sudo,” where he stated: “The Korean people migrated eastward from the Pamir Plateau or Mongolia in search of the source of light.”[16]

Despite its significance in Shin Chae-Ho’s historiography, relatively few studies have examined the Pamir Plateau Theory as an independent theory of Korean origins. Most references to it appear only within broader discussions of Shin’s nationalist historical thought and ancient Korean history.

In Collected Works of Choe Nam-Seon, Vol. 2 (1973), Choe Nam-Seon argued: “From the Black Sea through the Caspian Sea, extending along the Tian Shan Mountains, Altai Mountains, Sayan Mountains, Ablonoi Mountains, Xing'an Mountains, and Taihang Mountains to Korea, Japan, and the Ryukyu Islands, there existed a chain of peoples who shared a culture and social organization centered on the concept of ‘brightness’ (Balg-eum 밝음).”[17]

In “A Study on the Nationalistic Character of Shin Chae-ho’s Historiography” (2002), Park Geol-sun pointed out that: “Shin Chae-Ho’s concept of the nation was closely connected with the expansion of historical space.”[18]

Likewise, in “A Study of Historical Connections between Korea and Kazakhstan in Shin Chae-ho’s Joseonsa” (2025), Cho Byung-Hyun argued that: “Shin Chae-Ho regarded the Pamir Plateau region of Central Asia as the homeland of the Korean people and endowed them with a historical identity as a people who migrated eastward in search of brightness.”[19]

These studies demonstrate that the historical space of the Korean people may extend beyond the Korean Peninsula and Manchuria into the wider Eurasian steppe. Nevertheless, they suffer from a lack of empirical evidence and remain insufficiently integrated into contemporary academic frameworks. The previous studies discussed thus far are summarized in Table 1 below.

5) Limitations of Previous Studies and the Distinctiveness of This Study

As discussed above, the Northern Origin Theory was found to emphasize the importance of the northern cultural sphere based on the Liao River Civilization and the Hongshan Culture; the Southern Origin Theory emphasized the influence of southern cultures through agricultural traditions and maritime exchanges; the Multiple-Origin Theory emphasized the formation of the Korean people through the migration and integration of diverse groups; and the Pamir Plateau Theory emphasized the expansion of the historical space of the Korean people to the Eurasian dimension.

However, these studies have been found to have several limitations. Research has tended to be concentrated within particular disciplines, to approach specific regions from the perspective of a single-origin framework, and, due to the lack of sufficient empirical evidence and the fragmentary nature of existing studies, to have limitations in explaining ethnogenesis as a long-term historical process.

This study seeks to build upon the strengths of previous research while addressing its limitations through an integrated examination of documentary, archaeological, and genetic evidence. In addition, it defines ethnicity not as a static entity but as a dynamic community formed through processes of migration, contact, integration, and reconstruction. While taking the northern cultural sphere as the principal axis, this study also considers southern cultural influences and selected elements of Eurasian cultures in order to expand the spatial scope of the formation of the Korean people.

A summary of the limitations of previous studies and the distinctive features of the present study is presented in Table 2 below.

Empirical Analysis of the Origins and Migration of the Korean People

This chapter conducts an empirical analysis of the origins and migration of the Korean people through documentary evidence, archaeological materials, and genetic research. The objective is not merely to determine a place of origin but to identify historical patterns of mobility, interaction, and integration that contributed to Korean ethnogenesis.

1) Evidence from Historical Documents

(1) Dangun Mythology and the Historical Memory of Ethnogenesis

One of the most important documentary sources concerning the origin and formation of the Korean people is the Dangun myth recorded in the “Gojoseon” section of Volume 1 of the Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms (Samguk Yusa 三國遺事), The Dangun myth describes the descent of the Hwanung group from heaven and its union with a bear-totem group, culminating in the emergence of Dangun Wanggeom and the founding of Gojoseon.[20]

The Samguk Yusa, quoting the Ancient Records (Gogi 古記), states that “Hwanung, the son of Hwanin, wished to govern the human world and descended beneath the sacred tree (Sindansu) on Mount Taebaek with a retinue of three thousand followers, where he established the Divine City (Sinsi神市). Thereafter, Dangun Wanggeom founded Gojoseon and established his capital at Asadal.”

Jeon Jin-Kook (2022), in his “A Study on the Hwanin and Hwanung in the Myth of the Founding of Old Joseon”, argues that “myths have traditionally served as a collective means of remembering specific events such as the founding of a state or the deeds of heroic figures. Therefore, myths should also be understood as historical narratives.[21] The Dangun-related myths recorded in the Samguk Yusa and the Jewang Ungi represent actual founding myths of Gojoseon. Dangun may be understood as a mythologized representation of a historical ruler of Gojoseon who led a primitive politico-religious society, and not only Dangun but also Hwanung should be regarded as a historical figure.”

From this perspective, the Dangun myth should not be interpreted as a narrative explaining the emergence of a single bloodline. Rather, it can be understood as a symbolic representation of the process through which different cultural groups achieved political integration and formed a new community. As reflected in the Dangun myth, such interpretations suggest that the formation of the Korean people was not the result of a sudden emergence in a particular region, but rather a long-term process involving migration, settlement, contact, and integration. Accordingly, the Dangun myth may be regarded as an important documentary source for understanding the ethnogenesis of the Korean people.

(2) Concerning the Dongyi Peoples in Chinese historical records

Accounts concerning the Dongyi (東夷) recorded in the Chinese dynastic histories constitute important documentary evidence for the study of the origins and formation of the Korean people. Chinese historical records did not merely describe the Dongyi as peripheral tribes; rather, they recognized them as possessing a distinct cultural sphere separate from that of the Central Plains.

The Book of the Later Han (Hou Hanshu 後漢書 東夷傳) states that “the people of the Dongyi are gentle and compliant by nature, engage in few disputes, and are highly trustworthy (東夷之人 性柔順 少爭而多信)”, thereby describing the cultural characteristics attributed to the Dongyi.[22]

Similarly, the Records of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi 三國志 東夷列傳) (Wei Shu 魏書), records Buyeo, Goguryeo, Okjeo, and Dongye as separate polities while noting that they shared similar customs and ways of life. In particular, regarding Buyeo, it states that “the country was prosperous and wealthy, and from ancient times had never suffered destruction (其國殷富 自先世以來 未嘗破壞)” thereby portraying it as a state that maintained a stable political system over a long period.[23]

These records suggest that the Dongyi were perceived not merely as political entities but as communities possessing a certain degree of cultural identity. They further indicate that various groups distributed across Manchuria and the northern Korean Peninsula shared a common cultural sphere.

In his doctoral dissertation “A Study on the Formation and Spirit of the Korean People”, Park Jeong-hak (2009) argues that “because the Chinese traditionally regarded the Dongyi as barbarians, in-depth research on the Dongyi was neglected for a long time. However, beginning in the 1930s, Meng Wentong identified the Dongyi as one of the three major ethnic groups of ancient China. Subsequently, inspired by Fu Su-nien’s theory of the ‘Eastern Yi and Western Xia’ and the archaeological discoveries of the Dawenkou Culture, research on Dongyi culture expanded rapidly after the 1980s to the extent that it became known as the ‘Dongyi Cultural Boom.’”[24]

Likewise, Ki Su-Yeon (1994), in “A Study on the Concept and Historical Transformation of the Dongyi”, notes that some scholars advocated a northeastern origin theory of the Yin (Shang) people by identifying historical figures such as Yao, Shun, Chi You, and Confucius—who were described in Chinese historical records as belonging to the Dongyi—as ancestors of the Korean people.[25]

These studies provide important historical evidence for the continuity of the northern cultural sphere that developed after Gojoseon and contribute to our understanding of the historical background of Korean ethnogenesis.

(3) Continuity and Succession among Gojoseon, Buyeo, and Goguryeo

The historical records concerning Goguryeo’s succession from Gojoseon and Buyeo are closely related not only to questions of Korean ethnic identity but also to contemporary debates surrounding China’s Northeast Project. Gojoseon, Buyeo, and Goguryeo represent the principal historical lineage of Korean ethnogenesis, developing through the integration and amalgamation of various groups upon a northern cultural foundation.

Samguk Sagi (三國史記), in the “Annals of Goguryeo (高句麗本紀)” explicitly states that “Goguryeo originated from Buyeo[26] This record clearly identifies Goguryeo as a state belonging to the Buyeo lineage.

Likewise, Sanguozhi (三國志), in the “Account of the Dongyi (東夷傳)” of Wei Shu (魏書), notes that “the language and customs of Buyeo and Goguryeo were similar to one another.”[27] Such accounts indicate that Goguryeo did not emerge abruptly as an independent polity but rather inherited and developed the cultural traditions of the Buyeo sphere.

Furthermore, Jumong, the founder of Goguryeo according to its foundation myth, is portrayed as being of Buyeo lineage, while Buyeo itself emerged as a major political power in Manchuria following the decline of Gojoseon. These historical traditions and documentary records suggest a clear line of succession from Gojoseon to Buyeo and subsequently to Goguryeo.

Accordingly, the continuity among Gojoseon, Buyeo, and Goguryeo may be understood as an important historical reality. Rather than being the product of isolated and discontinuous events, the formation of the Korean people should be viewed as a long-term process of political and cultural development, characterized by continuity, adaptation, and integration across successive northern polities.

2) Archaeological Evidence

(1) The Liao River Civilization and the Hongshan Culture

The Liao River Civilization refers to the Neolithic and Bronze Age civilization that developed in the Liao River Basin. Among its most representative archaeological sites associated with the Hongshan Culture are the Dongshanzui site in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia, and the Niuheliang site in Chaoyang, Liaoning Province. Recent studies suggest the existence of significant cultural continuity between the Hongshan Culture and the Korean Peninsula.

Woo Silha (2007), in Beyond the Northeast Project: The Theory of the Liao River Civilization, argues that the regions of western Liaoning, the Liao River Basin, and the Korean Peninsula should be regarded as a single cultural sphere. As evidence, he points to comb-pattern pottery, stone cairn tombs, stone-cist burials, lute-shaped bronze daggers, and dolmens. According to Woo, these cultural elements represent an independent cultural tradition distinct from the Yellow River-centered civilization of the Central Plains.[28]

Similarly, Lee Dae-Gu (2024), in The Liao River Civilization Flows into the Korean Peninsula, contends that the Liao River Civilization developed independently of the Yellow River Civilization and is therefore closely related to questions concerning the origins of ancient Korean culture. He further suggests that, because the Liao River region represented by the Hongshan Culture was inhabited by groups identified as the Dongyi and Yemaek peoples, there is a possibility that the earlier cultural traditions of the region were connected to the culture of Gojoseon.[29]

Although it is widely acknowledged that the Hongshan Culture provided an important foundation for the formation of the northern cultural sphere of Northeast Asia and influenced the cultural developments that subsequently extended into Manchuria and the Korean Peninsula, it remains difficult to equate the Hongshan Culture directly with the culture of Gojoseon. Nevertheless, these studies clearly demonstrate that the Liao River Civilization and the Hongshan Culture constitute important archaeological evidence for understanding the formation of the Korean people and theories concerning their migration to the Korean Peninsula.

(2) Liaoning Bronze Dagger Culture and Dolmen Culture

Lute-shaped bronze daggers constitute one of the most important Bronze Age artifacts for the study of Korean ethnogenesis and the northern cultural sphere. Their name derives from the resemblance of the blade shape to the traditional East Asian lute (bipa). These artifacts are primarily distributed throughout Liaodong, Manchuria, and the northern Korean Peninsula.

Bok Gi-dae (2006), in his article “An essay on the cultural exchanges for the Bronze Age of the southern Manchuria,” argues that the Bronze Age began in the western Liaoning region around the twenty-fourth century BCE, slightly earlier than in Liaodong. As bronze culture expanded eastward, it reached the Liaodong Plain around the twenty-second century BCE and the mountainous regions of Liaodong around the twentieth century BCE.[30]

Yoon Nae-hyun (2014), in Gojoseon: The Birth of Our History, maintains that the Bronze Age culture of the Gojoseon cultural sphere followed an independent developmental trajectory distinct from that of the Yellow River basin.[31]

Similarly, Kim Seong-Beop (2019), in his master's thesis, concludes that although lute-shaped bronze daggers discovered on the Korean Peninsula exhibit certain connections with those found in the Liaoning region, they also possess distinctive characteristics in both form and manufacturing technology.[32] This observation suggests that the lute-shaped bronze dagger tradition was not merely transmitted from one region to another but may have undergone an independent process of development within Manchuria and the Korean Peninsula.

These studies indicate that the distribution and cultural characteristics of lute-shaped bronze daggers provide important archaeological evidence for the existence of a northern cultural sphere linking Manchuria, Liaodong, and the northern Korean Peninsula. As such, they contribute significantly to our understanding of the central cultural foundation underlying the formation of the Korean people.

(3) Dolmen and Stone-Mound Tomb Culture

Dolmens, which served as the tombs of the ruling class during the Bronze Age, are important archaeological remains that demonstrate social stratification and the formation of political power structures. They are representative prehistoric monuments that illustrate the uniqueness and continuity of Korean culture.

Lee Tae-Jin (2012) stated that “a representative artifact of Bronze Age culture is the northern-type dolmen in his book. This type of dolmen, also known as the table-type dolmen, is distributed mainly in the Liaodong region and the northwestern part of the Korean Peninsula.”[33]

Cho Won-Jin (2017), in “The Development and Foreign Relations of Old Joseon”, stated that “a continuous cultural sequence has been confirmed, extending from Pyongyang (2^nd century BCE), to Liaodong (4^th century BCE Iron Age culture), Liaodong (Jeonggawazi-type culture of the 6^th-5^th centuries BCE), Liaodong (Shuangfang Culture of the 10^th century BCE), and further back to the early second millennium BCE dolmen, stone-mound tomb, and cave-tomb cultures of Liaodong.”[34]

Dolmen culture is significant because it demonstrates not merely the spread of burial customs but also the organization of communities and the formation of political authority. Such studies indicate that dolmen and stone-mound tomb cultures constitute important evidence of the influence of the northern cultural sphere in the process of the formation of the Korean people.

(4) Rice Agriculture and Southern Cultural Elements

Archaeological evidence demonstrates not only the influence of northern cultural traditions but also the influx of southern cultural elements into the Korean Peninsula. One of the most representative examples is the transmission of rice agriculture. Rice cultivation is generally understood to have originated in the Yangtze River basin of China and subsequently spread to the Korean Peninsula and the Japanese archipelago.

Takakura Hiroaki (1992), in his article “The Route by Which Rice Arrived”, argues that archaeological evidence overwhelmingly supports the view that rice farming in Japan was introduced through the Korean Peninsula.[35]

Similarly, Yamazaki Sumio (1992), in “The Initial Appearance of Rice Cultivation: Rice Farming in Northern Kyushu”, contends that wet-rice agriculture was introduced from the Korean Peninsula into the Kyushu region during the stage characterized by the Incised-rim Raised-band Pottery Culture (刻目突帶文土器), and that it subsequently spread throughout Japan during the early Yayoi period.[36]

More recently, Kim Min-Koo (2026), in “Spread of Rice Cultivation in Prehistoric Northeast Asia,” analyzed the diffusion of rice cultivation from the middle and lower Yangtze River basin to various regions of Northeast Asia, including the Korean Peninsula and the Japanese archipelago, identifying four major stages in this process.[37]

These studies indicate that the spread of rice agriculture and the accompanying exchanges between the Korean Peninsula and the Japanese archipelago provide important evidence that southern cultural elements contributed, at least in part, to the formation of the Korean people. At the same time, they demonstrate that cultural development in Northeast Asia was shaped not by a single source but through continuous interaction and exchange among multiple regions and populations.

3) Population Formation as Reflected in Genetic Data

(1) Achievements of Modern Genetic Research

Genetic research provides a more objective means of identifying patterns of population movement and admixture by analyzing the biological relationships among human groups.

Kim Jin-Sook (2010), in her doctoral dissertation “Unravelling the origin and formation of Korean population with mtDNA haplogrouping of ancient bones excavated from Korean peninsula”, concluded that “the maternal lineage of the Korean people was initially formed primarily by northern populations, and that the present-day Korean population emerged through the subsequent incorporation of southern haplogroups.”[38] This finding supports the view that the formation of the Korean people was not the result of the continuity of a single bloodline but rather the outcome of migration and integration among diverse population groups.

Similarly, Kim Seok-Dong (2022), in In Search of Korean DNA by Kim Seok-Dong, argues that “recent advances in genetic research suggest that the formation of the Korean people should not be understood solely within the geographical confines of the Korean Peninsula, but rather within the broader context of Eurasian population history.”[39]

These studies indicate that, just as population movements centered around Lake Baikal and the northern Eurasian steppe contributed to the ethnogenesis of various peoples across Northeast Asia, the Korean people should likewise be understood as having emerged within a broad network of migration and interaction extending across Eurasia. Genetic evidence thus reinforces the view that Korean ethnogenesis was a long-term and dynamic process involving population movement, admixture, and cultural integration rather than the development of an isolated and homogeneous population.

(2) Northern Genetic Components

Genetic studies indicate that northern Eurasian components constitute a significant element of the genetic makeup of present-day Koreans. Pang Min-Kyu (2025) summarizes the results of ancient genome analyses and argues that present-day Koreans emerged through the admixture of two major ancestral populations. According to his interpretation, one component consisted of a northern Asian population that had been widely distributed across northern Asia, including Siberia, since the Stone Age, while the other was a population that began a rapid expansion from southern China into East and Southeast Asia approximately 3,500 years ago. He concludes that the Korean people were formed through the complex interaction and admixture of multiple populations that migrated from southern China and Southeast Asia over the course of the last 40,000 years.[40]

Seo Min-Seok (2004), in his doctoral dissertation “Phylogenic Analysis on Hypervariable Region Ⅰ and Ⅱ of Mitochondrial DNA from Ancient Human Bone Excavated in Korea”, analyzed mitochondrial DNA obtained from ancient skeletal remains discovered on the Korean Peninsula in order to trace the maternal lineages of past populations inhabiting the region.[41] His research provided important genetic evidence for reconstructing the biological history of populations that occupied the Korean Peninsula in different periods.

These studies suggest that the population of the Korean Peninsula was formed through a prolonged process of migration, interaction, and genetic admixture. They further indicate that the genetic composition of contemporary Koreans cannot be explained by a single ancestral lineage. Rather, it reflects the cumulative result of multiple population groups that moved across Northeast Asia and Eurasia over long periods of time and became integrated through repeated episodes of demographic and cultural interaction. Such findings support the view that Korean ethnogenesis was a dynamic and continuous historical process rather than the product of a single migration event or a homogeneous ancestral population.

(3) Southern Genetic Components

As discussed above, genetic evidence indicates that the Korean population is not composed solely of northern ancestral elements. Rather, contemporary Koreans appear to have emerged through a long process of interaction and admixture involving both northern and southern population groups.

Seo Min-seok (2004) notes that studies of mitochondrial DNA extracted from ancient human remains have demonstrated that the populations of the Korean Peninsula did not derive from a single maternal lineage. Instead, the maternal genetic heritage of ancient inhabitants of the peninsula shows affinities with present-day populations in Southeast Asia, Yunnan Province in southwestern China, and various Siberian groups.[42]

Likewise, Hyun Jae-Hwan (2018), in his PhD dissertation “Making a Genetic Nation: Human Genetics Research, National Identity, and Transnational Scientific Exchange in Korea, 1926–2009”, argues that while populations in Northeast Asia—including those of Korea, China, and Japan—largely inherited genetic components associated with northern Mongoloid populations, they also possess approximately 15 percent genetic contributions from populations originating in the South Pacific region. According to Hyeon, the coexistence of northern and southern genetic elements suggests that the formation of the Korean people was shaped through a prolonged process of migration, interaction, and population admixture.[43]

These findings indicate that the Korean people should not be understood as the product of a single ancestral lineage or a homogeneous ethnic origin. Rather, they reveal a complex genetic structure in which northern population elements constitute a major foundation while southern elements were incorporated through successive episodes of migration and interaction. Consequently, genetic evidence supports the interpretation that Korean ethnogenesis was a dynamic and long-term historical process characterized by population movement, cultural contact, and biological integration across Northeast Asia and the broader Eurasian region.

4) Integrated Evaluation of Documentary, Archaeological, and Genetic Evidence

Documentary evidence demonstrates historical continuity extending from the Dangun tradition through Gojoseon, Buyeo, and Goguryeo and suggests that Korean ethnogenesis occurred through long-term processes of migration and political-cultural integration.

Archaeological evidence—including the Liao River Civilization, Hongshan Culture, Liaoning Bronze Dagger Culture, and dolmen culture—indicates that the northern cultural sphere centered on Manchuria and Liaodong served as an important foundation for Korean ethnogenesis.

Genetic research demonstrates that the Korean people possess a complex structure in which northern genetic components constitute the primary foundation while southern elements were subsequently incorporated. However, each category of evidence possesses limitations.

Documentary sources frequently contain mythological and legendary elements. Archaeological and genetic evidence can reveal patterns of cultural movement and biological relationships but cannot independently demonstrate linguistic continuity, cultural identity, or historical consciousness. For this reason, the present study adopts an integrated analytical approach that combines the strengths of documentary, archaeological, and genetic evidence while compensating for the limitations of each.

The results suggest that: “The formation of the Korean people was not the product of a single lineage or a single culture but rather the outcome of long-term interaction, mobility, contact, and integration among diverse populations and cultural traditions centered on the northern cultural sphere.”

Modern Reinterpretation of the Pamir Plateau Theory and the Establishment of an Integrated Model

Based on the empirical analysis presented in Chapter 3, this chapter proposes a new theoretical framework. It reinterprets the Pamir Plateau Theory from a modern perspective and introduces the Dynamic Integrated Ethnogenesis Theory and the Northern-Centered Convergent Formation Theory as integrated models for explaining the origins and formation of the Korean people.

1) A Modern Reinterpretation of the Pamir Plateau Theory

(1) Limitations and Reexamination of the Direct-Origin Theory

Since the late twentieth century, Korean archaeology has accumulated significant research findings on the Liao River Civilization, the Hongshan Culture, and the cultural sphere of Gojoseon. As a result, many scholars have identified Manchuria and the Liaodong region as the central areas in the formation of the Korean people. These developments have made it increasingly difficult to regard the Pamir Plateau as the direct homeland of the Korean people, largely because of the lack of empirical evidence supporting such a claim. In addition, since mainstream academia has, in effect, rejected Shin Chae-ho’s historical perspective itself, the marginalization of the Pamir Plateau Theory may appear inevitable. Nevertheless, in order to analyze comprehensively the origins and formation of the Korean people, it is essential to reconsider both Shin Chae-ho’s historical consciousness and the Pamir Plateau Theory.

The contemporary neglect of Shin Chae-ho and the Pamir Plateau Theory stems fundamentally from an approach that focuses solely on whether the theory is factually correct, without fully understanding the essence of Shin’s historiography. Shin Chae-ho worked during a period before the development of modern archaeology and genetics, and his primary concern was not to scientifically prove a specific geographical origin. Rather, he sought to locate the historical space of the Korean people beyond the narrow confines of the Korean Peninsula imposed by colonial historiography and within the broader context of Eurasia.

He expanded the stage of national history beyond the Korean Peninsula to encompass Manchuria and the whole of Northeast Asia. His historical research was directed toward restoring national independence and historical agency. Therefore, the Pamir Plateau Theory should not be interpreted as a direct-origin theory in the empirical sense, but rather as a philosophical attempt to understand the process of ethnogenesis within a broad historical space.

(2) The Eurasian Mobility-Zone Model

The formation of ancient peoples did not occur suddenly within a single region; rather, it was the result of long-term migration, interaction, and integration. The Pamir Plateau is situated at a strategic point within this broader Eurasian network of exchange. To the east, it connects with the Tian Shan Mountains, the Mongolian steppes, and Lake Baikal; to the west, with the Caspian and Black Sea regions; to the south, with the Indian subcontinent; and to the north, with Siberia. Consequently, it is more appropriate to understand the Pamir Plateau not as the birthplace of a particular people but as a nodal point within a Eurasian mobility network.

From this perspective, the Pamir region highlighted by Shin Chae-ho can be interpreted not as a “place of ethnic origin” but as a symbolic Mobility Zone representing historical possibilities of movement. In other words, Shin did not view the formation of the Korean people as a static history based on bloodline, but rather as a dynamic historical process shaped by extensive migration and interaction.

Based on this perspective, it becomes possible to construct a mobility-zone model. Extending from the Pamir Plateau through Central Eurasia and the Altai region, across the Mongolian steppes, and into Manchuria, Liaodong, and the Korean Peninsula, this model does not imply that a specific population migrated in a single linear movement. Rather, it provides a theoretical framework for explaining the possibility that population movements and cultural exchanges occurred gradually and in multiple stages over a long period of time.

(3) Compatibility with the Northern-Origin Theory

When reinterpreted through the mobility-zone model, the Pamir Plateau Theory no longer fundamentally conflicts with the Northern-Origin Theory. The Northern-Origin Theory identifies Manchuria and Liaodong as the central regions in the formation of the Korean people. It argues that the cultural sphere of Gojoseon was centered in Liaodong and Manchuria and that Gojoseon itself emerged from a northern cultural tradition, making the northern cultural sphere—including Manchuria and Liaodong—the direct axis of Korean ethnogenesis.

Whereas conventional Northern-Origin theories have focused primarily on cultural development and state formation centered in Manchuria and Liaodong, the present model incorporates the broader background of long-term migration and cultural interaction that may have preceded those developments. In this interpretation, the Pamir Plateau does not signify the direct homeland of the Korean people; rather, it represents an expanded historical space used to explain long-term possibilities of movement on a Eurasian scale.

Thus, the reinterpretation of the Pamir Plateau Theory should not be regarded as a rejection or replacement of the Northern-Origin Theory. Instead, it should be understood as a complementary framework that extends the temporal and spatial scope of the Northern-Origin Theory into a broader and longer-term perspective. Such an interpretation is consistent with Shin Chae-ho’s effort to expand the spatial horizon of historical inquiry and is also compatible with the network-oriented perspectives increasingly adopted in contemporary Eurasian studies. This modern reinterpretation of the Pamir Plateau Theory serves as the theoretical foundation for the Dynamic Integrated Ethnogenesis Theory.

2) Systematizing the Dynamic Integrated Ethnogenesis Theory

(1) A New Approach to Ethnogenesis

As discussed above, studies concerning the formation of the Korean people have largely focused on identifying a specific place of origin. Consequently, the Northern-Origin Theory has emphasized Manchuria and Liaodong, the Southern-Origin Theory has highlighted southern China and Southeast Asia, and pluralistic theories have stressed the integration of diverse populations.

Recent research on ancient Northeast Asian civilizations has increasingly emphasized the interactions among the Liao River Civilization, the Yellow River cultural sphere, and the cultures of the Korean Peninsula. At the same time, contemporary historical and anthropological scholarship tends to understand ethnic groups not as biological communities based solely on common ancestry, but as social communities sharing historical experiences and collective memories. As a result, the dominant view today is that the formation of the Korean people was centered on northern cultural traditions while also incorporating and integrating indigenous southern cultural elements.

This study likewise regards the Korean people not as a fixed entity that suddenly emerged from a particular region, but as a community formed through long-term historical transformations. It accepts that Korean ethnogenesis was achieved not through a single origin but through an extended process of migration, interaction, integration, and reconstruction. Based on this understanding, the model proposed here is termed the Dynamic Integrated Ethnogenesis Theory.

(2) The Theoretical Structure of the Dynamic Integrated Ethnogenesis Theory

The Dynamic Integrated Ethnogenesis Theory proposed in this study does not view an ethnic group as a fixed community originating from a specific region or a single bloodline. Rather, it explains ethnogenesis as a dynamic historical process through which diverse groups move, interact, integrate, and reconstruct themselves over extended periods of time, eventually forming a historical community.

According to the Dynamic Integrated Ethnogenesis Theory, the formation of an ethnic community proceeds through the following five stages.

Stage 1: Mobility

The formation of a new ethnic community begins with mobility. Since prehistoric times, human populations have migrated due to factors such as climate change, the search for resources, and population growth. Northeast Asia was likewise part of an extensive network of movement connected to the Eurasian steppe zone, while Manchuria, Liaodong, and the Korean Peninsula were situated at key crossroads within these migration routes.

 Stage 2: Contact

Migrating groups inevitably come into contact with new environments and with existing populations. During this process, trade, intermarriage, alliances, and conflicts emerge, giving rise to various forms of cultural interaction. The Liao River Civilization, the Yellow River Civilization, and the cultural sphere of the Korean Peninsula influenced one another through long-term interaction. Through exchanges involving technology, ways of life, religious beliefs and rituals, as well as linguistic elements, the foundations for the formation of new communities were established.

Stage 3: Fusion

When contact among populations continues over an extended period, cultural fusion emerges. Fusion refers to the process through which different cultural elements are combined to create new social and cultural systems. The Bronze Age culture of the Korean Peninsula represents a typical example of such fusion, incorporating northern Liaoning Bronze Dagger traditions, southern rice-agricultural traditions, and indigenous cultural elements into a new cultural synthesis. Gojoseon itself should likewise be understood not as the state of a single ethnic group but as the result of political and cultural integration among diverse populations.

Stage 4: Reconstruction

Communities formed through fusion continually reconstruct themselves in response to changing historical environments. The historical development from Gojoseon to Buyeo, Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla was not a simple process of inheritance but involved the formation of new political orders and cultural identities. During this stage, accumulated historical experiences and collective memories strengthen communal identity and provide the foundation for ethnogenesis.

Stage 5: Ethnogenesis

The long-term outcome of mobility, contact, fusion, and reconstruction is ethnogenesis. Accordingly, the Korean people should not be defined as a biological group emerging at a specific historical moment. Rather, they should be understood as a historical community formed through a prolonged process of social, political, and cultural development.

(3) Construction of the Dynamic Integrated Theory of Ethnogenesis

The five stages described above do not operate independently. Rather, they form an interconnected historical process. Mobility produces contact; contact facilitates fusion; fusion generates reconstruction; and reconstruction ultimately leads to ethnogenesis. Within Northeast Asia, northern cultural traditions, southern cultural traditions, and indigenous cultural elements of the Korean Peninsula interacted continuously over long periods, resulting in the emergence of new communities. This process was not merely a matter of cultural diffusion. Instead, it involved selective adoption, adaptation, transformation, and reconstruction of cultural traditions. The Dynamic Integrated Theory of Ethnogenesis therefore explains Korean ethnogenesis as a complex and multilayered historical process rather than a simple transmission of culture from one region to another.

3) Development of the Northern-Centered Fusion Formation Theory

(1) Structure of the Northern-Centered Fusion Formation Theory

If the Dynamic Integrated Theory of Ethnogenesis explains the historical process through which ethnic groups emerge, the Northern-Centered Fusion Formation Theory explains the specific cultural elements that combined to produce the Korean people. As discussed previously, Korean ethnogenesis cannot be explained solely through northern cultural traditions. Archaeological evidence demonstrates the introduction of southern cultural elements such as rice agriculture into the Korean Peninsula. Genetic research likewise indicates that modern Koreans possess a genetic structure in which northern components predominate but southern components are also present. Furthermore, indigenous cultural traditions had existed on the Korean Peninsula since prehistoric times, while certain Eurasian cultural elements entered through long-distance interaction and exchange. Therefore, Korean ethnogenesis may be understood as the outcome of a historical process in which:

• Northern cultural traditions served as the central axis,
• Southern cultural elements provided supplementary influences,
• Indigenous cultural traditions offered the basis for local settlement and continuity,
• Certain Eurasian cultural elements entered through long-term interaction,

All of which underwent mobility, contact, fusion, and reconstruction on the Korean Peninsula. To conceptualize this process, the present study proposes the Northern-Centered Fusion Formation Theory. This theory recognizes the northern cultural sphere as the primary axis of Korean ethnogenesis while simultaneously incorporating southern cultural elements, indigenous traditions, and Eurasian influences. It accepts the historical processes of mobility, contact, fusion, and reconstruction as essential mechanisms of ethnogenesis.

Consequently, it preserves the strengths of the Northern Origin Theory while integrating important contributions from the Southern Origin Theory and the Multiple-Origin Theory. According to this model, the Korean people are neither the product of a single origin nor the result of a simple mixture of populations. Instead, they constitute a historical community formed through long-term processes of interaction and integration.

(2) Comparison between the Northern-Centered Fusion Formation Theory and Existing Origin Theories

As discussed previously, each existing theory of Korean origins possesses important strengths but also significant limitations. The Northern Origin Theory successfully explains the importance of northern cultural traditions but does not adequately explain the integration of southern cultural elements. The Southern Origin Theory highlights cultural exchange and agricultural diffusion but has difficulty explaining the formation of early Korean states and the historical continuity of northern cultural traditions. The Multiple-Origin Theory recognizes the integration of diverse populations but often lacks a clear explanation regarding the central axis and historical direction of ethnogenesis. The Pamir Plateau Theory expands the geographical scope of Korean history but remains difficult to verify empirically as a direct theory of origin. To overcome these limitations, the present study proposes the Northern-Centered Fusion Formation Theory.

This theory:

1. Recognizes the northern cultural sphere as the principal axis of Korean ethnogenesis.
2. Incorporates the roles of southern cultural elements and indigenous traditions.
3. Accepts long-term processes of migration, contact, and fusion among diverse populations.
4. Expands the spatial scope of Korean ethnogenesis to include broader Eurasian interaction networks.

The most significant difference between the Northern-Centered Fusion Formation Theory and previous theories lies in their basic perspectives. Most previous theories may be described as static origin theories, focusing primarily on a place of origin. By contrast, the Northern-Centered Fusion Formation Theory is a dynamic process theory, emphasizing historical processes of interaction, integration, and reconstruction. Whereas earlier theories concentrated on northward migration, southward migration, multiple origins, or broad Eurasian inflows, the present model emphasizes the continuous historical processes through which the Korean people emerged.

(3) Future Applications of the Theory

The Northern-Centered Fusion Formation Theory proposed in this study may be applied in various academic and policy-related fields. First, it provides a new analytical framework that shifts research on Korean origins beyond debates concerning a single place of origin and toward explanations of ethnogenesis as a historical process. Second, it offers a scholarly basis for responding to contemporary controversies surrounding the interpretation of Korean ancient history, including issues related to China's Northeast Project and certain marginalizing interpretations found within Japanese scholarship. Third, by reinterpreting Shin Chae-ho’s Pamir Plateau Theory as a Eurasian historical-spatial framework, it expands the geographical scope of Korean historical studies beyond the Korean Peninsula and Manchuria into the wider Eurasian world. Fourth, it may contribute to history education, the preservation of traditional cultural identity, and the development of broader historical and cultural networks connecting regions associated with historical migration routes. In this sense, the proposed theory may contribute to overcoming excessively peninsula-centered interpretations of Korean history and to strengthening historical consciousness and national identity.

Conclusion

This study originated from questions that emerged during the author's research on the historiography of Shin Chae-ho.

Specifically, the author sought to understand:

• How Shin Chae-ho’s Pamir Plateau Theory relates to the Northern Origin Theory, Southern Origin Theory, and Multiple-Origin Theory.
• Whether these theories can be interpreted within a unified framework.
• Whether a new theoretical model capable of integrating them can be constructed.

To address these questions, the study compared and analyzed the Northern Origin Theory, Southern Origin Theory, and Multiple-Origin Theory while conducting a comprehensive examination of documentary evidence, archaeological materials, and genetic research. The purpose was to reinterpret Korean ethnogenesis and propose a new theoretical framework explaining the origins and formation of the Korean people.

The principal findings of the empirical investigation are as follows. First, the historical center of Korean ethnogenesis was located within the northern cultural sphere, including Manchuria and Liaodong. Documentary evidence suggests continuity from Dangun mythology through Gojoseon, Buyeo, and Goguryeo. Second, the Korean people were not formed through a single lineage or a single culture. Rather, they emerged as a historical community formed through long-term interaction among diverse populations and cultural traditions. Third, archaeological evidence from the Liao River Civilization, Hongshan Culture, and the Liaoning Bronze Dagger cultural sphere, together with genetic research, indicates that Korean ethnogenesis possessed a multilayered structure centered on northern components while incorporating various additional elements.

Based upon these empirical findings, the study proposes the following new interpretations and theoretical frameworks. First, Shin Chae-ho’s Pamir Plateau Theory is reinterpreted from the perspective of Eurasian mobility networks. Rather than viewing it as a literal theory of origin, the study explains it as a Historical Spatial Theory that extends the historical space of the Korean people from Northeast Asia to the Pamir Plateau. Second, the study proposes the Dynamic Integrated Theory of Ethnogenesis, which explains ethnic formation through the historical processes of mobility, contact, fusion, and reconstruction. Third, the study presents the Northern-Centered Fusion Formation Theory as an interpretive model applying the Dynamic Integrated Theory of Ethnogenesis specifically to Korean ethnogenesis.

This model explains the Korean people as the outcome of long-term historical integration centered upon northern cultural traditions while incorporating southern, indigenous, and broader Eurasian elements. These theoretical frameworks provide a new approach that expands Korean ethnogenesis beyond the geographical limits of Manchuria and the Korean Peninsula and situates it within a broader Northeast Asian and Eurasian context.

The academic significance of this study may be summarized in three major points.The study shifts research on Korean origins away from debates concerning a single homeland and toward the broader study of ethnogenesis. By integrating documentary, archaeological, and genetic evidence, it offers a more multidimensional and dynamic framework for understanding Korean ethnogenesis. The two theories proposed in this study establish a new interpretive framework connecting the northern-centered logic of the Northern Origin Theory with the fusion-oriented perspective of the Multiple-Origin Theory. By reinterpreting Shin Chae-ho’s Pamir Plateau Theory as a Eurasian historical-spatial framework, the study opens new possibilities for future research on Shin Chae-ho’s historiography and on broader Eurasian historical interactions.

While it attempts an integrated interpretation of documentary, archaeological, and genetic evidence, many questions concerning Korean ethnogenesis remain unresolved. Future research incorporating additional archaeological discoveries, ancient DNA studies, and interdisciplinary methodologies will be necessary to refine and further test the theoretical models proposed here.

한민족 기원의 동태적 통합 민족형성론

초록

본 연구의 목적은 한민족의 기원설을 재검토하고, 한민족 형성과정을 통합적으로 규명하여 한민족의 기원과 이동에 관한 새로운 이론과 모형을 제시하는 데 있다. 이를 위한 조사방법은 문헌 조사법과 인터넷조사법을 병행하였으며, 분석방법은 비교분석법과 기술적(記述的) 분석방법을 사용하였다. 선행연구 동향 검토와 문헌 자료, 고고학 자료, 유전학 자료에 관하여 실증적 연구를 수행한 결과는 다음과 같다.

첫째, 선행연구는 특정 지역을 단일 기원 문제로 접근하고, 실증 자료 부족과 단편적 연구로 민족형성을 장기적인 역사 과정으로 입증하는 데 한계를 보였다.

둘째, 한민족의 기원은 역사적 중심축이 만주와 요동을 포함한 북방 문화권에 있었고, 고조선과 부여, 고구려로 계승된 것으로 나타났다.

셋째, 한민족 형성은 단일 혈통이나 단일 문화의 산물이 아니라 다양한 집단과 문화가 장기간 상호작용하며 형성된 역사적 공동체로 나타났다.

넷째, 요하문명과 홍산문화, 비파형 동검 문화권의 고고학적 근거와 유전학 연구는 한민족이 북방계 요소를 중심축으로 다양한 계통이 결합한 다층 구조로 나타났다. 이를 토대로 민족은 이동(Mobility)과 접촉(Contact), 융합(Fusion), 재구성(Reconstruction)의 연속된 과정을 통하여 형성된다는 것을 규명하고 이해할 수 있었다.

기존 연구의 장점을 취하고, 한계성을 보완하여 수립한 이론과 모형은 다음과 같다.

첫째, 신채호의 파미르고원설을 유라시아 이동 네트워크 관점에서 재해석하여 직접적인 기원설이 아니라, 한민족의 역사 공간을 북방에서 파미르고원까지 확대한 ｢역사공간론｣으로 설정하였다.

둘째, 민족형성을 이동과 접촉, 융합, 재구성의 역사적 과정으로 설명하는 ｢동태적 통합 민족형성론｣을 제시하였다.

셋째, ｢동태적 통합 민족형성론｣을 한민족에 적용한 해석모형으로 ｢북방 중심 융합 형성론」을 제시하였다. 본연구는 한민족 기원 연구를 기원지 논쟁에서 민족형성과정 차원으로 연구 범위를 확장하고, 이를 설명하는 통합적 분석 틀을 제시하였다는 점에서 학술적 의의가 있다.

1. 서론

한민족의 기원에 관한 연구는 역사적 기원을 규명하는 차원을 넘어 동북아 역사와 직결되는 중요한 문제이다. 중국의 동북공정은 고조선과 한민족 형성에 대한 논쟁을 심화시켰지만, 한민족의 기원과 형성에 관한 연구는 괄목할만한 성과를 거두지 못하고 있다. 지금까지 한국인의 기원에 관한 연구는 종합적으로 직접 다루지 않고, 문헌 사학의 보조학문으로 진행하여 한민족 형성과정의 중심축과 역사적 방향성을 제시하는 데에는 미흡한 측면이 있었다.

본 연구는 연구자가 신채호의 대륙 사관을 연구하면서 한민족의 기원과 이동에 관한 기존 연구의 한계성을 관찰하게 되었다. 거시적인 문제의식을 조성할 만한 계기를 마련하지 못하여 통합적으로 다루지 못하고, 한민족 형성을 특정 지역이나 특정 시점에서 완성된 결과로 이해하는 경향을 확인하였다. 신채호는 ‘한민족이 파미르고원에서 발원하여 밝음을 찾아 동쪽으로 이동하여 한반도에 정착한 것’으로 보았다. 이러한 파미르기원설이 한민족 기원에 관한 주요 학설과 어떤 연관성이 있으며, 기존 학설과의 관계는 어떻게 되며, 이를 종합적으로 해석하는 이론은 있는가? 있다면 체계화가 가능할까? 등에 대한 의문점을 갖게 된 것이 본 연구의 배경이 된다.

이상과 같은 의문점을 해소하기 위해 먼저 북방기원설과 남방기원설, 다원적기원설을 비교·분석하고, 문헌 자료와 고고학 자료, 유전학 자료를 종합적으로 실증 검토하여 한민족 형성과정을 재해석하여 한민족의 기원과 형성에 관한 새로운 이론을 제시하는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다. 이 같은 연구목적을 달성하기 위한 세부적인 연구목적은 다음과 같다.

첫째, 기존의 북방기원설과 남방기원설, 다원적기원설, 파미르기원설에 관한 연구 성과와 한계를 비교·분석한다.

둘째, 문헌 자료와 고고학 자료, 유전학 연구 성과를 종합적으로 검토하여 한민족 형성과정의 역사적 전개 양상을 실증적으로 분석한다.

셋째, 신채호의 파미르고원설을 직접적인 기원설이 아닌 유라시아 역사공간론의 관점에서 재해석한다.

넷째, 이러한 분석결과를 토대로 한민족의 기원과 이동에 관한 새로운 이론과 모형을 제시한다.

이상과 같은 연구의 목적을 효율적으로 달성하기 위해 공간적 연구 범위는 한반도와 중앙 유라시아, 일본까지 포함하였으며, 조사방법은 문헌 조사법과 인터넷조사법을 병행하고 분석방법은 비교 분석방법과 기술적(記述的) 분석방법을 사용하였다. 연구대상이 되는 한민족의 기원과 형성문제가 일정한 이론 적용과 통계적 분석을 할 수 없으므로 인해 국내·외에서 연구된 문헌과 고고학, 유전자에 관한 연구를 토대로 그에 따른 실태를 기술적 분석방법을 통해 전개하는 것이 바람직하다고 본다.

2. 한민족 기원설에 관한 선행연구 검토

본 장은 한민족 기원과 이동에 관한 선행연구를 검토하여 문제점을 분석하는 장이다. 본 장에서는 북방기원설과 남방기원설, 다원적기원설과 파미르고원설을 중심으로 한민족 기원과 한반도 이동에 관한 선행연구를 분석하고, 선행연구의 한계와 본 연구의 차별성을 검토한다.

1) 북방기원설

북방기원설은 한민족의 기원을 만주와 요동 지역을 중심으로 전개된 북방 문화권에서 찾는 이론으로, 오랫동안 가장 유력한 학설로 자리해 왔다.

윤내현(1989)은 󰡔한국고대사󰡕에서 “요서 지역을 고조선의 영역으로 포함하였으며, 하가점하층문화가 이미 국가사회로 진입하였다.”라고 인식하였고, 리지린(2018)은 『리지린의 고조선 연구』에서 청동검과 청동경이 만주·요동 지역의 문화적 연속성을 통해 고조선의 역사적 실체를 설명하였다. 우실하(2021)는 ｢동북아시아의 고대 철학, 종교, 문화 연구의 새로운 지평｣에서 “요하 유역에서 홍산문화, 하가점하층문화 등으로 대표되는 요하문명이 출현하였고, 동북아시아의 토착 세력인 이(夷)의 기반이 요하문명 지역으로 고조선과 깊은 관련이 있으며, 요하문명을 건설하고 살던 사람이 예맥족의 선조로 고조선․부여․고구려․발해를 세운 주체였다.”라고 주장하였다. 방민규(2025)는 ｢한국인 기원에 관한 최신 연구 성과와 전망｣에서 “한민족의 형성에는 북방에 이미 거주하고 있던 예맥족이 남쪽으로 이주하여 현지의 문화 요소와 섞여 한민족을 형성하게 된 것이다.”라고 설명하였다. 이 같은 연구는 한민족 형성의 중심축이 만주와 요동을 포함한 북방 문화권에 있었음을 보여주지만, 한반도 토착 문화와 남방 요소를 과소평가하는 측면이 있다.

2) 남방기원설

남방기원설은 한민족 또는 한민족 문화의 일부 기원을 남중국 및 동남아시아 지역에서 찾는 학설이다. 이 이론은 농경문화의 확산과 언어적 유사성, 선사시대 해양 교류를 중심으로 전개된다.

김병모(1994)는 󰡔한국인의 발자취󰡕에서 “고인돌 남방기원설을 통해 그는 청동기시대 남방에서 한반도로의 주민 이주가 활발하게 진행되었다.”라는 주장을 펼쳤다. 이홍규(2001)는 󰡔한국인의 기원󰡕에서 “한국인은 크게 두 집단으로 구분되는데 첫 번째 집단은 5만∼6만 년 전 아프리카에서 출발해 중앙아시아를 거쳐 시베리아를 통해 들어온 집단이고 다른 그룹은 해안을 따라 남쪽에서 올라온 집단이다.”라고 발표하였다. Jared Diamond(2005)는 󰡔총, 균, 쇠』에서 “일본인이 BC 400년을 전후해 한국에서 벼농사와 철기 문화를 가지고 이주한 자들의 후손이라는 설을 제기하면서 유전자적으로 보아도 한국인들이 일본인의 유전자에 큰 영향을 미쳤다.”라고 주장하였다. 19세기 말 조선에 들어온 프랑스 선교사 달레(2015)는 󰡔조선 교회사󰡕에서 한국인의 기원을 언급하면서 한국인을 몽골 계통으로 분류하고 주변국과의 비교를 통해 조선인이 중국인보다 일본인에 더 가까운 신체적 특징을 갖고 있음을 구체적으로 기술하였다. 미국인 헐버트(1906)는 달레의 주장에 동의하며 “드라비다족이 바다를 통해 한반도에 정착했고 한민족 형성에도 영향을 끼쳤다.”라고 주장하였다. 이 같은 연구는 한반도 문화 형성과정에서 남방계 문화 요소가 일정 부분 유입되었을 가능성을 제시하지만, 북방 고고학 자료와 연결성을 설명하지 못한다.

3) 다원적기원설

다원적기원설은 북방계와 남방계 등 다양한 지역과 혈통의 집단이 시차를 두고 한반도에 유입되어 선주민과 융합되어 한민족이 형성되었다는 이론이다.

방민규(2025)는 ｢한국인 기원에 관한 최신 연구 성과와 전망｣에서 “한국인의 조상이 북방계 집단을 중심으로 형성된 후 남방계 주민과의 혼합을 거쳐 요하문명과 고조선 문화권 형성의 주축이 되었다.”라고 본다. 최몽룡(2024)은 ｢시베리아의 토착 인들과 한국 문화의 기원(Ⅱ)｣에서 “한국인의 기원은 시베리아와 만주, 한반도로 이어지는 장기적, 다원적 형성과정을 거쳤다.”라고 설명하였다. 안승모(2003)는 ｢고고학으로 본 한민족의 계통｣에서 “한민족이 중국 동북지역과 러시아 극동, 한반도를 포함한 동북아시아 공간에서 형성되었으며, 청동기 및 초기 철기시대의 인구 이동은 환 발해권을 중심으로 이루어졌다.”라고 분석하였다. 한상복(2002)은 ｢인류학적 특성｣에서 “한민족은 북방계 신 시베리아계통을 중심으로 형성되었으며, 역사적으로 숙신과 조선, 예맥, 동이 등으로 기록된 집단이 한민족 형성과 밀접한 관련이 있다.”라고 설명하였다. 이 같은 연구는 북방 문화와 남방 문화, 한반도 토착 문화가 장기간 상호작용으로 오늘날 한민족이 형성된 것을 나타내지만, 한민족 형성과정의 중심축이 불명확하고, 역사적 서사와 방향성 부족하다.

4) 파미르고원설

파미르고원설은 신채호가 󰡔조선사󰡕 제2편 수두 시대에서 “조선 민족은 서쪽 파미르고원이나 몽골 등지에서 광명의 본원지를 찾아 동진하였다.”라고 주장한 데 근거한다. 그러나 학계에서 파미르고원설 자체를 독립적으로 연구한 사례는 많지 않으며, 대부분 신채호의 민족주의 사학과 상고사 인식을 논의하는 과정에서 부분적으로 언급되는 수준에 머물러 있었다.

최남선(1973)은 󰡔육당 최남선 전집 2󰡕에서 “흑해에서 카스피해를 거쳐 파미르의 북동 갈래인 톈산산맥으로부터 알타이산맥 사얀산맥, 아블로노이산맥을 따라 다시 남으로 방향을 바꾸어 흥안산맥, 태행산맥, 이동의 땅과 조선·일본·유구(琉球)를 포괄하는 일련의 선(線)에는 ᄇᆞᆰ(밝음)을 중심으로 하는 신앙과 사회조직을 가진 민족이 분포하였다. 문화적으로 확실한 하나의 연쇄성을 이루고 있다.”라고 밝혔다. 박걸순(2002)은 ｢신채호 역사학의 민족주의적 성격 연구｣에서 “신채호 역사학의 특징을 분석하면서 그의 민족 개념이 역사적 공간의 확대와 밀접하게 연결되어 있음”을 지적하였다. 조병현(2025)은 ｢단재 신채호의 󰡔조선사󰡕에 나타난 한국과 카자흐스탄의 역사적 연관성 연구｣에서 “신채호가 조선 민족의 본향을 중앙아시아 파미르고원 지역으로 상정하고, ‘밝음을 찾아 동방으로 이동한 민족’이라는 역사적 정체성을 부여하였다.” 이 같은 연구는 한민족의 역사 공간을 한반도와 만주에 한정하지 않고 유라시아 초원지대와 연결된 것을 보여주지만, 실증 자료가 부족하고, 현대 학문체계와 직접 연결이 미흡하다. 지금까지 살펴본 선행연구를 정리하면 아래 [표 1]과 같다.

5) 선행연구의 한계와 본 연구의 차별성

지금까지 살펴본 바와 같이 북방기원설은 요하문명과 홍산문화를 근거로 북방 문화권의 중요성을, 남방기원설은 농경문화와 해양 교류를 통한 남방 문화 영향을, 다원적기원설은 다양한 집단의 이동과 융합을 통한 한민족 형성을, 파미르고원설은 한민족의 역사 공간을 유라시아 차원으로 확장을 강조하는 것으로 분석되었다. 그러나 이 같은 연구는 분야별로 연구가 편중되어 있고, 특정 지역을 단일 기원 문제로 접근하고, 실증 자료 부족과 단편적 연구로 민족형성을 장기적인 역사 과정으로 설명하는 데 한계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구에서는 선행 연구의 장점을 취하고, 한계성을 보완하기 위해 문헌 자료와 고고학 자료, 유전학 자료를 통합적으로 규명하고자 한다. 그리고 민족을 정태적 존재가 아니라 이동과 접촉, 융합, 재구성의 과정을 거쳐 형성되는 동태적 공동체로 정의하고, 북방 문화권을 중심축으로 남방 문화와 일부 유라시아문화 요소를 함께 고려하여 한민족 형성의 공간적 범위를 확장할 것이다. 지금까지 설명한 기존 연구의 한계와 본 연구의 차별성을 정리하면 아래 [표 2]와 같다.

 3. 한민족 기원과 이동에 관한 실증적 분석

본 장에서는 한민족의 기원과 한반도 이동설에 관해 문헌 자료와 고고학 자료, 유전학 자료를 실증적으로 분석한다. 한민족 기원과 이동과정의 역사적 특성을 다층적으로 분석하여 시사점을 도출, 제4장에서 새로운 이론과 모형을 제시하기 위한 토대를 마련한다.

1) 문헌 자료에 나타난 한민족 형성

(1) 단군 신화와 집단 이동의 기억

한민족의 기원과 형성을 기록한 대표적 문헌 자료는 󰡔삼국유사󰡕 권1 ｢고조선조｣의 단군 신화다. 단군 신화는 환웅 집단의 천강(天降)과 곰 토템 집단의 결합을 통해 단군왕검의 출현과 고조선의 건국 과정을 서술하고 있다.

󰡔삼국유사󰡕는 󰡔고기󰡕를 인용하여 “옛날에 환인의 서자 환웅이 인간 세상을 다스리고자 하여 무리 3천 명을 거느리고 태백산 신단수 아래에 내려와 신시를 연 것으로 기록하고 있으며, 이어 단군왕검이 아사달에 도읍을 정하고 조선을 건국하였다.”라고 전하고 있다. 전진국(2022)은 ｢고조선 건국신화의 환인과 환웅｣에서 “전통적으로 신화는 건국과 같은 특정 사건이나 영웅적 인물에 대한 집단의 기억방식이다. 그러므로 신화 또한 역사로 설명하면서 󰡔삼국유사󰡕와 󰡔제왕운기󰡕에 수록된 단군 관련 신화는 실제의 고조선 건국신화이고, 단군은 실존의 고조선 왕을 원시 제정일치 사회의 수장을 신화화한 존재로 이해하고 단군뿐만 아니라 환웅 역시 역사적 존재로 설정하였다.”

이러한 관점에서 단군 신화는 단일 혈통의 발생을 설명하는 신화가 아니라, 서로 다른 문화집단이 정치적 통합을 이루어 새로운 공동체를 형성하는 과정을 상징적으로 표현한 것으로 이해할 수 있다. 이 같은 연구는 단군 신화에 나타난 바와 같이 한민족 형성을 특정 지역에서 갑자기 출현한 결과가 아니라 이동과 정착, 접촉과 융합의 장기적 과정으로 이해하게 하는 중요한 문헌 자료로 평가할 수 있다.

(2) 중국 사서에 나타난 동이 집단

중국 정사에 기록된 동이 관련 기사는 한민족 형성 연구에서 중요한 사료적 가치를 지닌다. 중국 사서는 동이 집단을 단순한 주변 부족으로 기록한 것이 아니라 중원과 구별되는 독자적 문화권으로 인식하였다.

󰡔후한서󰡕「동이열전｣은 “東夷之人 性柔順 少爭而多信”라고 기록하면서 동이인의 문화적 특성을 설명하고 있다. 󰡔삼국지󰡕 ｢위서 동이전｣은 “부여·고구려·옥저·동예 등을 개별 국가로 기록하면서도 풍속과 생활양식이 유사하다”라고 설명하고 있다. 특히, 부여에 대해서는 “其國殷富 自先世以來 未嘗破壞”이라고 기록하여 “오랜 기간 안정된 정치체제를 유지한 국가로 평가하였다.” 이러한 기록은 동이 집단이 단순한 정치적 집단이 아니라, 일정한 문화적 정체성을 가진 공동체로 인식하였고, 만주와 한반도 북부에 걸쳐 분포한 여러 집단이 일정한 문화권을 공유하였음을 나타낸다. 박정학(2009)은 ｢한민족의 형성과 얼에 대한 연구｣에서 “중국에서는 동이를 야만인으로 봤으므로 오랫동안 동이에 관한 깊은 연구가 이루어지지 않았다. 1930년대 蒙文通이 동이를 고대 중국의 3대 종족의 하나로 보기 시작하여, 1970년대 傅斯年의 ‘夷夏東西說’에 이은 大文口문화의 발굴을 계기로 1980년대 이후 ‘東夷文化熱’이라고 할 정도로 동이문화에 관한 연구가 활발해졌다.”라고 평가했다. 기수연(1994)은 ｢동이의 개념과 실체의 변천에 관한 연구｣에서 “중국 사서에 동이인이라고 표시된 요, 순, 치우, 공자 등의 인물을 우리 조상으로 봄으로써 은족(동이족)의 동북기원설을 주장하였다.” 이 같은 연구는 고조선 이후 형성된 북방 문화권의 지속성과 한민족 형성의 역사적 배경을 제공한다.

(3) 고조선·부여·고구려의 계승성

고구려가 고조선과 부여를 승계한 기록은 한민족의 정체성 문제뿐만 아니라, 중국의 동북공정과도 매우 밀접한 관련성을 가지고 있다. 고조선과 부여, 고구려는 북방계 중심축 위에 다양한 집단이 융합, 통합하며 발전한 한민족 형성의 역사적 주류 계보이다.

󰡔삼국사기󰡕 ｢고구려 본기｣의 “高句麗者 出自夫餘 고구려는 부여에서 유래했다.”라는 기록은 고구려가 부여 계통의 국가임을 분명히 밝히고 있다. 󰡔삼국지󰡕 ｢위서 동이전｣에는 “부여와 고구려의 언어와 풍속이 서로 유사하다.”라고 기록하고 있다. 이러한 기록은 고구려가 단절적으로 등장한 국가가 아니라, 부여 문화권의 계승자였음을 나타낸다. 고구려 건국신화의 주몽은 부여계 혈통이고, 부여는 고조선 붕괴 이후 만주 지역에서 성장한 정치세력임을 나타낸다. 이 같은 연구는 고조선과 부여, 고구려의 계승은 분명한 사실이며, 한민족 형성은 단절된 사건이 아니라, 장기간에 걸쳐 이루어진 정치적·문화적 발전을 보여준다.

2) 고고학 자료에 나타난 이동과 문화 확산

(1) 요하문명과 홍산문화

요하문명은 랴오허(요하) 유역에서 발생한 신석기·청동기 문명을 말하고, 대표적인 홍산문화 유적으로 내몽고 적봉시와 요령성 조양시 일대 동산취 유적과 우하량 유적을 꼽는다. 최근 연구에 의하면 홍산문화와 한반도 사이에 깊은 문화적 연속성이 존재한다. 우실하(2007)는 󰡔東北工程 너머 ‘遼河文明論’󰡕에서 “요서와 요하, 한반도를 하나의 문화권으로 보았으며, 그 근거로 빗살무늬토기와 적석총, 석관묘, 비파형 동검, 고인돌 등을 제시하면서 이러한 문화 요소는 황하 중심의 중원 문화권과 구별되는 독자적 문화 전통을 나타낸다.”라고 하였다. 이대구(2024)는 󰡔요하문명은 한반도로 흐른다󰡕에서 “요하문명은 중원의 황하문명과 상관없는 독자적인 문명으로 한민족의 고대 문화의 기원 문제와 관련성이 있다. 홍산문화로 대표되는 요하 지역이 동이족과 예맥족이 거주한 지역이므로 요하 지역의 선대문화가 고조선 문화로 연결할 가능성을 제기하였다.” 홍산문화가 동북아 북방 문화권 형성 기반이 되었고, 이후 만주와 한반도로 이어지는 문화적 흐름에 영향을 미친 것은 사실이지만, 홍산문화를 곧바로 고조선 문화로 동일시하는 데는 어려운 점이 있어 보인다. 그러나 이러한 연구는 요하문명과 홍산문화는 한민족 형성과 한반도 이동설을 이해하는 데 중요한 고고학적 자료인 것은 틀림없다.

(2) 비파형 동검과 북방 문화권

비파형 동검은 한민족 형성과 북방 문화권 연구에 가장 중요한 청동기 유물 가운데 하나이다. 칼날의 형태가 비파(琵琶)를 닮아 붙여진 이름으로, 주로 요동과 만주, 한반도 북부지역에서 발견된다.

복기대(2006)는 ｢한국상고사와 동북아시아 청동기시대 문화｣에서 “청동기시대는 요서 지역이 요동 지역보다 약간 빠른 서기전 24세기경에 시작되어 동진하면서 요동평원 지역은 서기전 22세기경, 요동 산지는 서기전 20세기경에 시작되었다.”라고 하였다. 윤내현(2014)은 『고조선, 우리 역사의 탄생』에서 “고조선 문화권의 청동기 문화가 황하 유역과는 다른 독자적 발전 과정을 보여준다.”라고 평가하였다. 김성법(2019)은 ｢한반도 출토 비파형동검의 유형과 기술적 계보｣에서 “한반도 출토 비파형 동검이 요령 지역 비파형 동검과 일정한 연관성을 가지면서도 형태와 제작기술 면에서 독자적인 특징을 보인다.”라고 분석하였다. 이는 비파형 동검 문화가 단순한 전파가 아니라 만주와 한반도 지역에서 독자적으로 발전하였을 가능성을 시사한다.

이 같은 연구는 비파형 동검의 분포와 문화적 특성은 만주와 요동, 한반도 북부를 연결하는 북방 문화권의 존재를 보여주는 중요한 고고학적 근거이며, 한민족 형성의 중심축을 이해하는 데 도움을 준다.

(3) 고인돌과 적석총 문화

고인돌은 청동기시대 지배층의 무덤으로 사회 계층화와 정치적 권력 구조의 형성을 보여주는 중요한 고고학 자료로서 한민족 문화의 독자성과 연속성을 보여주는 대표적인 선사 유적이다.

이태진(2012)은 󰡔새 한국사 -선사시대에서 조선 후기까지-󰡕에서 “청동기 문화의 대표적인 유물이 북방식 고인돌로서 탁자식 고인돌이라고 불리는 이 고인돌은 주로 요동 지역과 한반도 서북지역에 분포한다.”라고 기술하였다. 조원진(2017)은 ｢고조선의 발전과 대외관계 연구｣에서 “평양(기원전 2세기)-요동(기원전 4세기 철기 문화)-요동(기원전 6세기∼기원전 5세기 정가와자유형)-요동(기원전 10세기 쌍방문화)-요동(기원전 2천년기 초기 고인돌․돌무지 무덤문화 및 동굴 무덤)으로 연속성 있는 문화가 이어졌음이 확인된다.”라고 하였다.

고인돌 문화는 단순한 장례 풍습의 확산을 넘어 공동체 조직과 정치적 권력의 형성을 보여준다는 점에서 중요하다. 이 같은 연구는 고인돌과 적석총 문화는 한민족 형성과정에서 북방 문화권의 영향을 보여주는 중요한 자료이다.

(4) 벼농사와 남방 문화 요소

고고학 자료는 북방 문화의 영향뿐 아니라 남방 문화의 유입도 보여준다. 대표적인 사례가 벼농사의 전래이다. 벼농사는 일반적으로 중국 양쯔강 유역에서 발달한 농업기술로 한반도와 일본 열도로 퍼진 것으로 알려져 있다.

高倉洋彰(1992)은 ｢稻の來た道｣에서 “고고학적으로 일본의 도작 농경이 한반도에서 유입되었다.”라는 사실을 대부분 수긍하고 있으며, 山崎純男(1992)도 ｢稻作の初現 -北部九州の稻作農耕｣에서 “각목돌대문토기(刻目突帶文土器) 단계에 한반도 수도작이 규슈지역에 유입되고, 야요이시대(彌生時代) 전기 초반에 일본 전역으로 퍼졌다.”라고 보았다. 최근, 김민구(2026)는 ｢중국-한반도 간 선사시대 벼농사 확산의 시공간적 분석｣에서 “벼농사는 중국 양쯔강 중·하류 유역에서 시작하여 한반도와 일본 열도를 포함한 동북아시아 여러 지역으로 확산하는 과정을 네 단계로 분석하였다.” 이 같은 연구는 한반도와 일본 열도 간의 벼농사 확산과 교류는 한민족 형성과 남방 문화 요소가 일정 부분 작용하였음을 보여준다.

3) 유전학 자료에 나타난 집단 형성

(1) 현대 유전학 연구의 성과

유전학 연구는 인구집단의 생물학적 연관성을 분석함으로써 집단 이동과 혼합의 양상을 보다 객관적으로 파악할 수 있게 한다.

김진숙(2010)은 ｢한반도 출토 고인골의 미토콘드리아 DNA 분석을 통한 한민족 기원과 형성과정에 관한 연구｣에서 “한민족의 모계 계통이 초기 북방계 집단을 중심으로 형성되었으며, 이후 남방계 하플로그룹이 유입되면서 오늘날 한국인 집단이 형성된 것”으로 분석하였다. 이러한 연구는 한민족 형성과정이 단일 혈통의 계승이 아니라 다양한 인구집단의 이동과 융합의 결과였음을 뒷받침한다. 김석동(2022)은 󰡔한민족 DNA를 찾아서󰡕에서 “최근 유전학 연구 성과를 종합하여 한민족 형성을 한반도 내부의 문제로만 볼 것이 아니라 더 넓은 유라시아 차원에서 이해할 필요가 있다.”라고 주장하였다. 이 같은 연구는 바이칼호와 북방 초원지대를 중심으로 한 인구 이동이 동북아 여러 민족형성에 영향을 미친 것과 같이 한민족도 이러한 광역 이동 네트워크 속에서 형성된 집단으로 나타났음을 보여주는 자료이다.

(2) 북방계 유전자 요소

한국인의 유전자 구성에서 북방계 요소가 중요한 비중을 차지하고 있다. 방민규(2025)는 ｢한국인 기원에 관한 최신 연구 성과와 전망｣에서 “고대인 게놈을 분석한 결과, 석기시대에 시베리아 등 북아시아지역까지 널리 퍼져 있던 북아시아인 인구집단(선남방계)과 약 3500년 전 남중국에서 동아시아 및 동남아시아로 급격히 팽창하기 시작한 새로운 인류집단(후남방계)이 혼합돼 현재의 한국인은 지난 4만 년 동안 여러 차례에 걸쳐 이동해 온 남중국 및 동남아시아 인구집단이 복잡하게 뒤섞여 형성됐다.”는 것이다. 서민석(2004)은 ｢한국에서 출토된 고대 인골의 미토콘드리아 DNA 고도 과변이 조절영역Ⅰ·Ⅱ의 계통학적 분석｣에서 “한반도 출토 고인골의 미토콘드리아 DNA를 분석하여 과거 한반도 주민집단의 모계 계통을 추적하였다.” 이러한 연구는 한반도 주민집단이 장기간에 걸친 이동과 혼합 과정을 거쳐 형성되었고, 한국인의 유전적 구성이 단일 혈통이 아니라, 여러 계통의 인구집단이 장기간 이동과 혼합을 거쳐 형성되었음을 보여준다.

(3) 남방계 유전자 요소

한민족의 유전학 자료는 북방계 요소만으로 구성되어 있지 않은 것은 이미 앞에서도 살펴보았다.

서민석(2004)은 ｢한국에서 출토된 고대 인골의 미토콘드리아 DNA 고도 과변이 조절영역 Ⅰ과 Ⅱ의 계통학적 분석｣에서 “고대 인골의 미토콘드리아 DNA 분석 연구들은 한반도 주민집단이 단일 계통이 아니라, 현존하는 동남아 및 중국 남서부의 원난성 지역 주민, 시베리아 민족들이 고대 한반도 거주인의 모계 유전과 관련 있는 것을 확인하였다.” 현재환(2018)은 ｢유전적 민족 만들기｣에서 “한국과 중국 및 일본 등 동북아시아 집단은 대체로 ‘북방계’ 몽고인종의 유전자를 이어받았지만, 남태평양 집단의 유전자도 15%가량 이어받아 북방계와 남방계 유전자가 공존하는 양상이 확인되어, 한민족 형성과정이 장기간의 이동과 혼합을 통해 이루어졌을 가능성을 도출하였다.” 이 같은 연구는 한민족은 북방계 요소를 기반으로 남방계 요소가 결합한 복합적 구조로 되어있는 것을 보여준다.

4) 문헌·고고학·유전학 자료의 종합 평가

문헌 자료는 단군 신화와 동이 관련 기록, 고조선과 부여, 고구려로 이어지는 역사적 계승성을 통해 한민족 형성이 장기간에 걸친 이동과 통합의 과정임을 규명할 수 있었고, 고고학 자료는 요하문명과 홍산문화, 비파형 동검 문화권, 고인돌 문화 등을 통해 만주와 요동을 포함한 북방 문화권이 한민족 형성의 중요한 중심축이었고, 유전학 연구는 한민족이 북방계 요소를 기반으로 남방계 요소가 결합한 복합적 구조로 되어있는 것으로 분석되었다.

그러나 이 같은 연구는 일정한 한계를 가지고 있어 한민족의 기원과 이동에 관한 문제를 다 설명하지 못하는 한계를 가지고 있다. 문헌 자료는 신화와 전승의 성격을 포함하고 있으며, 고고학 자료와 유전학 자료는 문화의 이동과 인구집단의 생물학적 특성은 보여주지만, 집단의 언어와 문화, 역사적 정체성은 입증하지 못하기 때문이다.

따라서 본 연구에서는 세 자료의 장점을 취하고, 한계성을 보완할 수 있도록 통합적 분석을 시도하였다. 그 결과‘한민족 형성은 단일 혈통이나 단일 문화의 결과가 아니라, 북방 문화권을 중심으로 다양한 집단과 문화 요소가 장기간 이동과 접촉, 융합하는 과정에서 이루어진 것’을 규명하였다. 이상의 분석 내용을 정리하면 아래 [표 3]과 같다.

4. 파미르고원설의 현대적 재해석과 통합 모델 정립

본 장은 제3장의 실증적 분석을 토대로 새로운 이론을 제시하는 장이다. 파미르고원설을 현대적 관점에서 재해석하고, 한민족 기원과 형성과정을 통합한 ｢동태적 통합 민족형성론｣과 ｢북방 중심 융합 형성론｣을 제시한다.

1) 파미르고원설의 현대적 재해석

(1) 직접 기원설의 한계와 재검토

20세기 후반, 한국고고학은 요하문명과 홍산문화, 고조선 문화권에 관한 연구 성과를 축적하면서 한민족 형성의 중심 공간을 만주와 요동 지역에서 찾았다. 이 같은 연구는 파미르고원설은 실증적 근거가 부족하다는 이유와 함께 파미르고원을 직접적인 기원지로 보는 견해를 더 어렵게 만들었다. 이런 이유도 있지만, 주류사학계에서 신채호 역사관 자체를 사실상 부인하고 있는 터라, 파미르고원설의 외면은 어쩌면 당연할 수도 있다. 그러나 한민족의 기원과 형성을 통합적으로 분석하기 위해서는 신채호의 역사에 대한 인식과 파미르고원설의 재해석은 반드시 짚고 넘어가야 한다.

신채호와 파미르고원설의 현실적인 외면은 단순한 사실 여부의 문제로 접근하여 신채호 역사학의 본질을 충분히 이해하지 못한 데 근본적인 원인을 찾을 수 있다. 신채호가 활동하던 시기는 현대 고고학과 유전학 연구가 발전하기 이전이었으며, 그의 관심은 특정 지역을 과학적으로 증명하는 데 있지 않았다. 오히려 그는 한민족의 역사 공간을 식민사관이 설정한 한반도 내부의 좁은 틀에서 벗어나 더 광대한 유라시아 공간에서 찾으려 했다.

민족사의 무대를 한반도에 한정하지 않고 만주와 동북아 전체로 확대하였고, 역사 연구는 민족의 자주성과 역사적 주체성을 회복하려는 데 있었다. 따라서 파미르고원설은 실증적 의미의 직접 기원설이 아니라, 민족형성과정을 광역적 역사 공간 속에서 이해하려는 역사철학적 시도로 재해석할 수 있다.

(2) 유라시아 이동 가능권역 모델

고대 민족의 형성은 단일 지역에서 단번에 이루어진 것이 아니라 오랜 기간에 걸친 이동과 접촉, 융합의 결과로 나타난다. 파미르고원은 이러한 유라시아 교류망 안의 출발지점에 위치한다. 동쪽으로는 톈산산맥과 몽골 초원, 바이칼 호수, 서쪽으로는 카스피해와 흑해 지역, 남쪽으로는 인도 아시아대륙, 북쪽으로는 시베리아와 연결된다. 따라서 파미르고원은 특정 민족의 기원지라기보다 유라시아 이동 네트워크의 결절점(node)으로 이해하는 그것이 더욱 타당하다.

이러한 관점에서 보면 신채호가 주목한 파미르 지역은 ‘민족 발생지’가 아니라 ‘역사적 이동 가능권역(Mobility Zone)’을 상징하는 공간으로 해석할 수 있다. 즉 신채호는 한민족의 형성과정을 정태적인 혈통 중심의 역사로 보지 않고, 광범위한 이동과 접촉 속에서 전개되는 동태적 역사로 인식하였다고 봐야 한다.

이러한 관점을 바탕으로 이동 가능권역 모델 구축이 가능하다. 파미르고원에서 중앙 유라시아와 알타이를 거쳐, 몽골 초원, 만주와 요동, 한반도로 이어지는 이 모델은 특정 집단이 일직선으로 이동하였음을 의미하는 것이 아니고, 오히려 장기간에 걸친 인구 이동과 문화 교류가 단계적으로 이루어졌을 가능성을 설명하는 이론적 구조로 볼 수 있다.

(3) 북방기원설과의 정합성

파미르고원설을 이동 가능권역 모델로 재해석하면, 기존 북방기원설과 충돌 문제도 상당 부분 해소된다. 북방기원설은 만주와 요동 지역을 한민족 형성의 중심 공간으로 설정한다. 고조선 문화권의 중심이 요동과 만주 지역에 있었고, 고조선은 북방계 문화의 산물로 한민족 형성의 직접적인 중심축이 만주와 요동을 포함한 북방 문화권에 있었다고 본다. 기존 북방기원설이 주로 만주와 요동을 중심으로 한 문화 형성과 국가발전 과정에 초점을 맞추었다면, 이 모형은 그 이전 단계에 존재했을 가능성이 있는 광역적 이동과 문화 교류의 배경까지 포함한다. 즉, 파미르고원은 한민족의 직접적 기원지를 의미하는 것이 아니라, 유라시아 차원의 장기적 이동 가능성을 설명하기 위한 상위 개념의 역사 공간으로 확대한 것이 된다.

파미르고원설의 재해석은 북방기원설을 부정하거나 대체하는 개념이 아니라, 북방기원설의 시간적, 공간적 범위를 더 장기적이고, 더 광역적 차원으로 확장한 보완적 의미로 받아들여야 한다. 이러한 해석은 신채호가 역사학의 공간적 범위를 확장하고자 노력했던 것과 일치하고, 최근 유라시아 연구에서 제시하는 이동 네트워크 관점과 부합한다. 이러한 파미르고원설의 현대적 재해석은 「동태적 통합 민족형성론」의 이론적 토대가 된다.

2) ｢동태적 통합 민족형성론｣의 체계화

(1) 민족형성에 대한 새로운 접근

지금까지 살펴본 바와 같이 한민족 형성에 관한 연구는 ‘한민족은 어디에서 왔는가’라는 기원지 탐색에 집중하였다. 그 결과 북방기원설은 만주와 요동을, 남방기원설은 남중국과 동남아시아를, 다원적기원설은 다양한 집단의 융합을 강조하는 결과를 초래하였다. 최근 동북아 고대문명 연구는 요하문명과 황하문화, 한반도 문화권의 상호작용을 중시하고, 현대 역사학과 인류학 연구는 민족을 혈연적 집단이 아니라, 역사적 경험과 문화적 기억을 공유하는 사회적 공동체로 인식하는 결과를 내놓고 있다. 그리고 한민족 형성의 중심축인 북방 문화권과 남방의 토착 문화 요소와 융합한 것으로 보는 견해가 주류를 이룬다.

본 연구에서도 ‘한민족은 특정 지역에서 갑자기 출현한 고정된 실체가 아니라, 장기간의 역사적 변화 속에서 형성된 공동체로 규명하고, 한민족 형성은 단일 기원보다는 이동과 접촉, 융합과 재구성의 장기적 과정에서 이루어진 것’으로 받아들였다. 이러한 인식을 토대로 접근한 모형이 ｢동태적 통합 민족형성론(Dynamic Integrated Ethnogenesis Theory)｣이다.

(2) ｢동태적 통합 민족형성론｣의 이론 구조

본 연구에서 제시하고자 하는 ｢동태적 통합 민족형성론｣은 민족을 특정 지역이나 단일 혈통에서 발생한 고정된 공동체로 보지 않고, 다양한 집단이 장기간에 걸쳐 이동과 접촉, 융합, 재구성하는 역사적 과정을 통해 형성되는 동태적 역사공동체로 설명하는 이론이다. ｢동태적 통합 민족형성론｣에 의한 민족형성은 다음과 같은 5단계 과정을 거친다.

제1단계 : 이동(Mobility)

새로운 민족형성의 형성은 이동에서 출발한다. 인류는 선사시대 이후 기후변화와 자원확보, 인구 증가 등의 요인으로 이동하였다. 동북아시아도 유라시아 초원지대와 연결된 광범위한 이동 네트워크에 해당하고, 만주와 요동, 한반도는 이러한 이동 경로의 교차점에 위치한다.

제2단계 : 접촉(Contact)

이동한 집단은 새로운 환경과 기존 주민집단과 접촉하게 된다. 이 과정에서 교역과 혼인, 동맹과 갈등이 발생하고, 문화적 상호작용이 이루어진다. 요하문명과 황하문명, 한반도 문화권은 장기간 상호작용하면서 영향을 주고받았다. 이 과정에서 기술과 생활양식, 종교와 제의, 언어적 요소 등의 상호 교류를 통해 공동체 형성 기반을 이루었다.

제3단계 : 융합(Fusion)

접촉이 장기화하면 문화적 융합이 나타난다. 융합은 서로 다른 문화 요소가 결합하여 새로운 사회를 형성하는 과정이다. 한반도 청동기 문화는 북방의 비파형 동검 문화와 남방의 벼농사 문화, 토착 문화가 결합하여 형성된 대표적 사례이다. 고조선도 단일 집단의 국가가 아니라, 다양한 집단이 정치적·문화적으로 통합한 결과이다.

제4단계 : 재구성(Reconstruction)

융합된 공동체는 새로운 환경 속에서 지속해서 재구성한다. 고조선 이후 부여와 고구려, 백제, 신라의 발전 과정은 단순한 계승이 아니라 새로운 정치질서의 형성과정에서 비롯한 것이다. 민족은 이 과정에서 축적된 역사적 경험과 공동체 정체성을 강화하고, 민족형성 기반을 마련한다.

제5단계 : 민족형성(Ethnogenesis)

이동과 접촉, 융합과 재구성으로 나타난 장기적 결과가 민족형성이다. 한민족 형성도 어느 특정 시점에 나타난 혈통의 집단이 아니라, 이와 같은 장기간의 역사적 발전 과정을 거쳐 형성된 공동체로 정의할 수 있다. 이와 같은 ｢동태적 통합 민족형성론｣의 단계별 구조를 정리하면 [표 4]와 같다.

(3) ｢동태적 통합 민족형성론｣ 모형 구축

앞에서 제시한 민족형성의 5단계는 각각 독립적으로 존재하는 과정이 아니라, 상호 연계된 역사적 발전 과정에서 이루어진다. 이동은 접촉을 낳고, 접촉은 융합을 촉진하며, 융합은 새로운 사회적·문화적 재구성을 통해 민족형성으로 이어진다. 동북아시아에서는 북방 문화권과 남방 문화권, 한반도 토착 문화가 장기간 상호작용하면서 새로운 공동체가 형성되었다. 이러한 민족형성 과정은 단순한 문화 전파가 아니라 선택과 수용, 변형과 재구성의 과정을 포함하는 복합적 역사 발전 과정을 거쳐 확립하는 구조를 갖는다. 지금까지 논의한 ｢동태적 통합 민족형성론｣의 구조와 한민족 형성 경로 모형을 정리하면 [표 5]와 같다.

 3) ｢북방 중심 융합 형성론｣ 모형 개발

(1) ｢북방 중심 융합 형성론｣의 구조

「동태적 통합 민족형성론｣이 한민족 형성의 역사적 과정을 설명한 이론이라면, ｢북방 중심 융합 형성론｣은 그 과정에서 어떠한 문화 요소들이 결합하여 한민족을 형성하였는지를 설명하는 구조적 모형이다.

앞에서 설명한 바와 같이 한민족 형성을 북방 문화만의 결과로 설명하기에는 한계가 있다. 고고학 연구는 벼농사를 비롯한 남방 문화 요소가 한반도로 유입되었음을 보여주고 있으며, 유전학 연구 역시 한국인이 북방계 요소를 중심으로 하면서도 남방계 요소가 결합한 구조로 되어있고, 한반도에는 선사시대부터 다양한 토착 문화가 존재하였으며, 일부 유라시아문화 요소도 장기간의 교류를 통해 유입된 것을 확인하였다. 그러므로 한민족 형성은 북방 문화권을 중심축으로 하면서 남방 문화 요소와 토착 문화 요소, 그리고 일부 유라시아문화 요소가 장기간 이동과 접촉, 융합의 과정을 거쳐 한반도에서 재구성된 결과로 이해할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 형성과정을 통합하여 ｢북방 중심 융합 형성론｣이라는 이론으로 개념화하였다.

 ｢북방 중심 융합 형성론｣은 북방 문화권을 한민족 형성의 중심축으로 설정하면서도 남방과 토착 선주민, 유라시아 문화 요소를 포괄한다. 그리고 이동과 접촉, 융합, 재구성의 역사적 과정을 통한 민족형성으로 이해하고, 북방기원설의 타당성을 유지하면서 남방기원설과 다원적기원설의 성과를 통합한다. 따라서 한민족은 단일 기원이나 단순 혼합의 산물이 아닌, 장기적인 역사 과정에서 형성된 공동체가 된다. 이는 북방기원설의 역사적 타당성을 유지하면서도 남방기원설과 다원적기원설의 연구 성과를 함께 수용하는 통합적 모형의 기본개념이 된다. ｢북방 중심 융합 형성론｣의 구조를 개념화하면 [표 6]과 같다.

(2) 기존 기원설과 ｢북방 중심 융합 형성론｣ 비교

이미 앞에서 살펴본 바와 같이 기존의 북방기원설은 문화 융합 과정을, 남방기원설은 형성의 중심축을 충분히 설명하지 못하는 한계를 가지고 있으며, 다원적기원설은 융합의 방향성과 역사적 전개 과정을 제시하지 못하고, 파미르고원설은 실증적 기원설로 보기 어렵다는 비판이 존재하였다. 이러한 한계를 극복하기 위하여 새로운 이론으로 ｢북방 중심 융합 형성론｣을 제시하였다.

이 이론은 북방 문화권을 한민족 형성의 중심축으로 인정하면서, 남방 문화와 토착 문화의 역할을 함께 고려하고, 다양한 집단의 이동과 접촉, 융합 과정을 포괄적으로 수용하고, 한민족 형성 공간 범위를 파미르고원까지 확대한 것이다. 기존 기원설과 ｢북방 중심 융합 형성론｣의 큰 차이점은 기존 학설은 모두 ‘정태적 기원론’이라면, ｢북방 중심 융합 형성론｣은 ‘동태적 형성과정론’에 해당한다. 역사를 이해하는 방법에도 차이가 있다. 기존 기원설이 남하와 북상, 다중, 광역 유입에 초점을 두는 반면, ｢북방 중심 융합 형성론｣은 교류와 통합, 재구성을 통해 오늘날 한민족이 형성되었다고 본다. 지금까지 설명한 ｢북방 중심 융합 형성론｣과 기존 기원설을 비교하면 [표 7]과 같다.

(3) 연구의 활용 방향

본 연구에서 제시한 ｢북방 중심 융합 형성론｣은 후속 연구와 정책 수립 등 다양한 분야에 활용할 수 있다. 활용 방향을 구체적으로 제시하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한민족 기원 연구를 단순한 기원지 논쟁의 차원을 넘어 민족형성과정을 설명하는 새로운 분석 틀로 활용할 수 있다. 둘째, 최근 중국의 동북공정과 일본 학계 일부의 주변화 논리, 한민족의 고대사 해석을 둘러싼 논쟁에 대응할 수 있는 학문적 근거를 제시할 수 있다. 셋째, 신채호의 파미르고원설을 유라시아 역사공간론으로 재해석하여 한민족 연구의 공간적 범위를 한반도와 만주로 한정하지 않고, 유라시아 차원의 광역 역사 공간으로 확대하는 연구에 기초자료로 활용할 수 있다. 넷째, 바른 역사 교육과 한민족의 전통문화와 국가 정체성 회복, 이동 경로 국가와 네트워크 구축 등에도 활용할 수 있다.

이같이 한민족 형성의 새로운 이론은 반도 사관에 매몰되어 있는 역사관과 한민족의 정체성 회복, 국가관 함양과 건전한 시민을 양성하는 데 이바지할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

5. 결론

본 연구는 연구자가 단재 신채호를 연구하면서 신채호의 파미르기원설이 한민족 기원에 관한 주요 학설인 북방기원설과 남방기원설, 다원적기원설과 어떤 관계가 있으며, 이를 종합적으로 해석하는 방법은 있는지? 방법이 있다면 어떤 이론과 모형을 적용할까? 등에 대한 의문점을 갖게 된 것이 연구의 배경이었다.

이상과 같은 의문점을 해소하기 위해 먼저 북방기원설과 남방기원설, 다원적기원설을 비교·분석하고, 문헌 자료와 고고학 자료, 유전학 자료를 종합적으로 검토하여 한민족 형성과정을 재해석하고, 이를 토대로 한민족의 기원과 형성에 관한 새로운 이론을 제시하는 것이 본 연구의 목적이었다.

이상과 같은 연구의 목적을 효율적으로 달성하려는 조사방법은 문헌 조사법과 인터넷조사법을 병행하였으며, 분석방법은 비교분석법과 기술적(記述的) 분석방법을 사용하였다. 문헌 자료와 고고학 자료, 유전학 자료에 관하여 실증적 연구를 수행한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한민족의 기원은 역사적 중심축이 만주와 요동을 포함한 북방 문화권에 있었고, 단군 신화와 동이 관련 기록에 의하면 고조선과 부여, 고구려로 계승된 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 한민족 형성은 단일 혈통이나 단일 문화의 산물이 아니라 다양한 집단과 문화가 장기간 상호작용하며 형성된 역사적 공동체로 나타났다. 셋째, 요하문명과 홍산문화, 비파형 동검 문화권의 고고학적 근거와 유전학 연구는 한민족이 북방계 요소를 중심축으로 다양한 계통이 결합한 다층 구조로 나타났다.

실증적 분석에서 규명된 결과를 토대로 제시한 한민족의 기원과 이동에 관한 새로운 이론과 모형은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 신채호의 파미르고원설을 유라시아 이동 네트워크 관점에서 재해석하여 직접적인 기원설이 아니라, 한민족의 역사 공간을 북방에서 파미르고원까지 확대한 ｢역사공간론｣으로 설명하였다. 둘째, 민족형성을 이동과 접촉, 융합, 재구성의 역사적 과정으로 설명하는 ｢동태적 통합 민족형성론｣을 제시하였다. 셋째, 통합 민족형성 이론을 한민족에 적용한 해석모형으로 ｢북방 중심 융합 형성론」을 제시하였다. 이러한 이론과 모형은 한민족 형성을 만주와 한반도에 국한하지 않고, 더 넓은 동북아 및 유라시아 차원으로 확대하는 새로운 틀로 작용할 것이다.

본 연구의 학문적 의의는 첫째, 한민족 기원 연구를 단순한 기원지 논쟁에서 벗어나 민족형성과정 연구로 전환하고, 문헌 자료와 고고학 자료, 유전학 자료를 종합적으로 검토함으로써 한민족 형성을 더 입체적이고 동태적으로 설명하는 통합적 분석 틀을 제시한 것이다. 둘째, 본 연구가 제안한 두 가지 이론은 북방기원설의 중심축 논리와 다원적기원설의 융합 논리를 연결하는 새로운 해석모형으로서 학문적 의의가 있다. 셋째, 신채호의 파미르고원설을 유라시아 역사공간론으로 재해석함으로써 단재 역사학 연구의 새로운 가능성을 제시한 것이다.

그러나 본 연구는 이러한 성과를 거두었지만, 몇 가지 한계와 보완과제를 가지고 있다. 첫째, 본 연구는 기존 문헌과 선행연구를 중심으로 수행된 문헌연구 성격으로 고대 문헌에 대한 분석을 충분히 실시하지 못하였다. 둘째, 연구자가 유전학 분야에 대한 전문 지식이 부족하여 최근 연구 성과의 독자적인 검증을 수행하지 못하였다. 셋째, 「동태적 통합 민족형성론」과 「북방 중심 융합 형성론」은 기존 연구 성과를 종합하여 이론적 모형을 제시하였지만, 구체적인 사례 연구와 비교 연구를 수행하지 못하였다. 이러한 한계성과 보완과제는 연구자가 심도 있는 후속 연구를 통하여 지속해서 발전시켜 나갈 예정이다.

연구자가 본연구과제를 진행하면서 절실하게 느낀 점은 향후 한민족 형성 연구는 특정 학문 분야에 한정하지 않고, 다양한 분야로 확대하여 융합연구사업으로 수행해야 한다는 것이었다. 중국의 동북공정과 일본의 역사 왜곡에 대응하기 위해 대륙 사관 연구를 국가전략 연구과제로 채택하고, 이를 위해 중앙 유라시아 국가들과 역사 네트워크 구축에 적극적으로 나서야 한다는 생각을 지금도 지울 수 없다.

한민족의 기원에 관한 연구는 단순한 과거사 규명의 차원을 넘어 국가 정체성과 역사 주권, 동북아 역사 질서와 직결되는 중요한 문제이다. 본 연구의 부족한 부분은 연구자의 심도 있는 연구와 노력으로 일정 부분은 해소되겠지만, 정부가 담당해야 할 국가 정체성과 역사 주권 부분은 단시일 내에 해결될 전망은 거의 밝지 않다. 정부가 나서지 않으면 곧 한계에 봉착해 우리는 본향을 잃어버리는 민족이 될 것이다. 앞으로 다양한 분야에서 심도 있는 연구가 이루어지길 간절히 바란다. 그리고 정부와 관련 단체의 관심과 후속 연구자들의 열정적인 탐구 정신을 기대해 본다.

초 록

본 연구는 한국 고대사 인식이 교육제도, 역사교과서, 국가서사, 집합기억, 공론장의 상호작용 속에서 사회적으로 구성되는 과정을 분석하고자 한다. 기존 연구는 식민주의 사학 비판, 교과서 서술 변화, 유사역사학 및 고대사 논쟁의 확산을 각각 다루어 왔으나, 이들이 고대사 인식의 형성·표준화·재생산·논쟁화로 이어지는 연속적 과정으로 어떻게 연결되는지는 충분히 해명하지 못했다.

이에 본 연구는 지식사회학, 집합기억론, 상상된 공동체론, 상징권력론, 권력-지식론을 종합하여 근대 역사학의 성립, 식민지 시기 지식 생산 구조, 해방 이후 인식 틀의 수정과 계승, 역사교과서의 제도적 역할, 디지털 공론장에서의 기억 경쟁을 분석한다.

특히 고조선 서술, 한사군 위치 논쟁, 홍산문화 담론을 사례적 분석 축으로 삼아, 고대사 쟁점이 사료 해석의 문제를 넘어 역사주권, 국가서사, 집합기억의 문제로 전환되는 과정을 검토한다. 이러한 접근의 초점은 고대사 자체의 새로운 사료 해석이나 고고학적 실증에 있지 않고, 한국 고대사 인식이 학술장, 교육제도, 국가서사, 공론장 속에서 사회적으로 구성되고 정당화되는 과정을 사회학적 관점에서 분석하는 데 있다.

그 결과 한국 고대사 인식은 과거 사실의 단순한 반영이 아니라 사회적 권위, 교육, 기억, 담론이 교차하며 형성된 중층적 산물임을 확인하였다. 이는 고대사 논쟁을 단순한 찬반 구도가 아니라 지식의 정당화와 기억의 제도화를 둘러싼 사회학적 문제로 재위치시킨다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 이러한 논의를 통해 본고는 고대사 인식의 사회적 구성 과정을 역사주권과 공적 기억의 관계 속에서 재검토한다.
